When Howard said that, Yvonne was totally clueless. "Grandpa, what are you even talking about? What does apologizing to Kaia have to do with me getting into Morganburg University?"
"Trust me on this. When I get a chance to have you two alone, you better apologize to her properly," Howard said.
"But—" Yvonne hesitated.
"No buts. Like I said, if you don't apologize, you can kiss your chance goodbye," Howard cut in firmly.
Yvonne opened her mouth to object, but in the end, she held back. She still didn't get why Howard was so insistent, but there was no way she was giving up on Morganburg University.
For one thing, almost all her friends were already there. And this year, the university was different. Ever since the new president took over, the school had started working with Dr. Bennett's research institute.
Sure, she knew she'd never have a shot at those research competitions, but being at a school collaborating with the institute meant there was always the wild chance she could actually bump into the legendary Dr. Bennett one day.
"Fine, I'll go apologize," Yvonne said, finally giving in.
Soon enough, Howard found a chance to call Kaia over privately.
With Yvonne present, Howard didn't address Kaia as Ms. Bennett, the principal.
"So, what did you want to talk to me about?" Kaia asked, puzzled.
"Kaia, actually, my granddaughter wants to apologize to you, but she couldn't do it with everyone watching. So I figured I'd give you two a chance to talk alone," Howard explained.
"Oh." Kaia nodded in understanding, then turned to Yvonne. "Go ahead, apologize."
Yvonne shot Kaia a look as she acted like Yvonne owed her an apology or something. Any leftover guilt in Yvonne's heart instantly disappeared.
Seeing Yvonne stubbornly silent, Howard grew impatient. "Yvonne, what are you waiting for? Weren't you the one who begged me to set this up for you?"
'Begged? Yeah, right. As if I'd ever lower myself like that!' Yvonne scoffed inwardly.
Still, she considered her own goals and sucked it up. She was clearly in the wrong this time anyway, apologizing wasn't really a big deal.
"Sorry, Kaia. I got dragged into someone else's drama earlier," Yvonne finally admitted.
"Good, glad you get it." Kaia nodded.
'What the heck? Why is she talking to me like she's in charge? It seriously feels like Grandpa scolding me, and we're literally the same age!' Yvonne grumbled to herself again.
Yvonne held back an eye roll, then leaned in to whisper, "Grandpa, I already apologized. But what's that got to do with my spot? How are you going to make sure I get in?"
Just as Kaia was about to go, Howard called after her, "Kaia, is it true Morganburg University isn't allowing backdoor admissions anymore?"
Yvonne blinked hard, totally lost. 'What is Grandpa even going on about? Why ask Kaia, just another student, about something like this?'
Kaia stopped and replied, "Yep. It has been letting people in through the back door for years, but that's just not fair to the hardworking students, especially those from tough backgrounds. That's why I suggested to the old president we should cut it out."
'What the hell?' Yvonne felt her brain short-circuiting. 'It dropped backdoor admissions because Kaia said so? Is she for real? Kaia was just a high schooler back then, still cramming for the SAT! She wasn't even at the university yet!'
Howard also looked surprised. "Didn't expect that idea came from you."
"But to be honest, I think bending the rules a bit for some people isn't necessarily a bad thing," Howard continued.
"Oh? And why's that?" Kaia asked.
