"Nothing is totally black and white. My take is, maybe let the ultra-rich buy their way in, pay a real premium. That kind of money is pocket change for them, but for the university, it's a huge windfall.
"We could use those funds to support low-income students, boost scholarships, or open up more aid spots," Howard explained.
Kaia rubbed her chin, clearly thinking it over. "You've got a point. Go on."
He continued, "That's just one angle. Another idea is to have those wealthy families either donate or sponsor upgrades to the cafeteria, library, or dorms. That way, students get a better learning and living environment.
"Of course, it's all about mutual benefit, we can't expect them to do it for nothing. Just put their company names on the school website as a thank-you. We get the resources, they get the publicity. Everyone wins, right?"
The more Kaia listened, the more she liked it. After a brief pause, she added, "And if Dr. Bennett's institute gave priority access to its research to the companies that support the school, they'd be even more eager to invest."
Howard's eyes widened as he stared at Kaia's youthful face, waves of shock crashing inside him, heart pounding like crazy. 'Handing over major research breakthroughs from Dr. Bennett's institute? Is that really something anyone can just decide on their own?'
This was on a whole different level compared to Kaia's earlier announcement at the school meeting; about the institute letting the campus research competition champion in. Not even close.
Those breakthroughs took the effort of the entire institute, and here Kaia was, dropping promises without so much as a phone call to anyone at Dr. Bennett's place.
Anyone else, Howard would've called it pure bragging. But for Kaia, she was the president of Morganburg University. No way she'd boast about something she couldn't back up.
And with his knack for reading people, Howard could tell Kaia wasn't just making things up.
If this was real, then Kaia's status had to be leagues above even the professors at Dr. Bennett's institute. No regular professor could just decide to dish out top research results whenever they felt like it.
'Who IS she, really?!' The thought left Howard stunned, unable to calm down for ages.
Meanwhile, Yvonne was left totally baffled, her brain basically scrambled. 'How did we go from talking about backdoor admissions at Morganburg University to suddenly discussing the research breakthroughs at Dr. Bennett's institute? What is even happening?'
After mulling it over for a whole minute, Kaia finally came to a decision. "Okay, here's how it's gonna go. Morganburg University will allow special admissions for the rich.
"But there's a catch; your score can't be more than fifty points under the cutoff, or it's just gonna wreck our averages. As for the price per point and the exact requirements, that's on you to figure out."
"Me?" Howard looked genuinely caught off guard.
"I trust you to handle it," Kaia said, shooting him a look, dead serious.
"Alright then, I'll handle it," Howard replied right away.
"Alright," Kaia said, pausing for a second before continuing. "You know what, Mr. Fisher? You've got a real talent for this whole school management thing. How about you try out being vice president for a while?"
"Me? Vice president? I'm not so sure that's for me." Howard hesitated. "Research is my main game, if I start juggling both, it might really throw off my work."
"Come on, I don't see it that way," Kaia said smoothly.
Then, she added, "I'm not even from a computer science background. I just switched over when I hit a wall in my field to mix things up and get a fresh angle. I've always liked using cross-training to open my mind and level up."
