Howard's jaw dropped. He was starting to get what Kaia meant when she talked about her "field," and suddenly, it all clicked, why someone with her kind of background would show up at their school just to study computer science.
And now, he could finally see why Keaton had gone so out of his way to foist such a small-town girl onto Tobias, no matter how much everyone else objected.
"Mr. Fisher, I really believe you've got what it takes to be vice president, but it's your call. If you're not interested, I won't pressure you," Kaia said gently.
Although, if Howard actually turned her down, the truth was, Kaia couldn't help but feel a bit let down.
"I'm in! Of course I'm in!" Howard beamed. "Uh, Kaia, just curious, do you think I've got a knack for scientific research?"
Yvonne was already lost in confusion, and hearing her brilliant grandpa ask Kaia so humbly, she was absolutely floored.
Kaia replied without a second thought, "If you've already made it to senior professor at Morganburg University, you clearly have serious talent."
"So, do you think there's any chance I could go observe and learn at Dr. Bennett's institute?" Howard asked hopefully.
Since Howard had basically figured out her true identity, Kaia decided there was no need to hide it anymore. "If you want to come by, just let me know ahead of time."
"Yes, yes, yes! That's awesome!" Howard was so happy, he started hopping around like he'd just hit the jackpot.
Honestly, anyone would be thrilled. Dr. Bennett's institute was a place every researcher dreamed of entering.
"Alright then, that's settled. Tobias just messaged me, so I'm heading out," Kaia said, flashing a quick smile before leaving.
"Take it easy! Don't rush!" Howard called after her.
Watching Kaia walk away, he couldn't help but feel a wave of envy that Keaton had managed to get someone like her as his granddaughter-in-law.
"Gra-Grandpa? Are you seriously my grandpa right now?" Yvonne stammered.
She was totally thrown for a loop seeing her usually calm and scholarly grandpa bouncing around like a kid who just won a prize.
"What nonsense are you talking about?" Howard said, looking at her.
"No way, Grandpa, you... you seriously... did Kaia just make you vice president of Morganburg University?" Yvonne blurted out, still trying to process everything.
"You heard it with your own ears, didn't you?" Howard replied, sounding slightly exasperated.
"No, no, no, wait, let me get this straight. She just made you vice president? Like, seriously? Just because she knows someone at Dr. Bennett's institute? Even if she does, how does that give her the authority to make you vice president at Morganburg University?
"And are you saying the person she knows is actually Dr. Bennett? I mean, they're both Bennetts, could Kaia be some distant relative or something?" Yvonne babbled, completely lost.
Howard's mouth twitched at her rambling.
He'd been just about to warn Yvonne not to blurt out Kaia's secret, but at this point, his granddaughter was clearly as clueless as ever.
'All this talk, and that's the only thing she managed to figure out?' Howard thought helplessly.
"Looks like Kaia was right. If someone's getting into Morganburg University through connections, their score can't be more than fifty points below the cutoff. Any lower than that and it really does make the university look bad," Howard said, shaking his head.
"Grandpa, what are you even talking about?" Yvonne asked, still totally lost.
"Listen, you better not let a single word of what Kaia and I just talked about slip out. This is serious! If you spill anything, I'm not calling you my granddaughter!" he warned, his face dead serious.
"Okay, I get it. I promise I won't tell anyone Kaia's distant relative is Dr. Bennett," Yvonne said, rolling her eyes. 'Seriously, what's the big deal? It's just a distant relative, not Dr. Bennett herself. Why all the drama?'
