"You've got way too much faith in me, but I'm not even thinking about entering," Kaia said.
Since Tobias still wasn't buying it, Kaia had to erase every trace of his doubt.
"Why not? Don't you want to get into Dr. Bennett's lab?" Tobias asked.
"Everyone's got their own ambitions. Plus, Morganburg University brings in top talent from all over the country, this place is packed with geniuses. How can you be so sure I'd take first place in the science competition?" Kaia replied.
"It's you, no doubt about it." Tobias sounded so firm.
Kaia hesitated for a split second, lips twitching like she almost wanted to say something, but held back.
Then, she finally said, "Alright, let's drop it. Want anything else to eat? I'll go grab it for you."
Luckily, Tobias knew when to ease off. Any more talk about it, and Kaia was sure the whole vibe would've gone down in flames.
As he moved around to fetch food, Kaia quietly exhaled. For once, she could breathe easy.
With how sharp Tobias was, Kaia knew that if she slipped even once, her Dr. Bennett identity would be totally exposed.
Two days flew by, and the science competition finally kicked off.
That day, every news outlet in the country had their eyes glued to Morganburg University.
Horace, still stuck in the hospital, couldn't stop grinning as he watched the coverage on TV. "I knew it! My stubbornness paid off! Kaia taking over was the best thing that could've happened. Now the Morganburg University science competition is all anyone's talking about.
"The president of Longsea University is probably crying right now. Next year, our enrollment is going to break all records! Just thinking about it gets me all fired up!" Horace laughed.
The door swung open, and Cissy, the president of the Piano Association, walked in.
"You're not exactly young anymore, and you're still getting all worked up? The doctor said you can't get too excited, or you'll end up six feet under," Cissy said.
"I think you're just jealous. Kaia agreed to take over my school, but she won't be your successor at the Piano Association," Horace replied, grinning from ear to ear.
Cissy snorted. "Jealous? You think you're so clever, pulling all those shady tricks? Do you even realize how disgusting that is?"
"Oh, please. If you could fake being sick to get Kaia to take over your Piano Association, you'd totally do it," Horace shot back.
"Nonsense!" Cissy stomped her foot. "I came here out of the goodness of my heart to check on you, but seeing you so lively just proves it; only the pests last forever!"
"Goodness of your heart? Yeah, tell that to someone who'd believe it. You just want to watch me make a fool of myself," Horace retorted.
"You get more impossible every day! Talking to you is just pointless!" Cissy huffed.
After Cissy left the hospital ward, cane in hand, she paused in the corridor, her mind still replaying Horace's words.
'Maybe if I pretended to be sick, Kaia would step up and take my spot in the Piano Association,' she mused.
But Horace already pulled that stunt just now. If she copied him, Kaia would see right through it.
Since that scheme was out, Cissy figured she'd have to let her handsome protégé try his luck and charm Kaia instead.
Kaia strolled along the cobblestone paths of Morganburg University, the campus was alive with every kind of excited conversation about the competition.
"Andrea Bennett, huh? Never thought I'd see you back on campus," a girl said somewhere behind her.
'Andrea Bennett?' The name made Kaia lift an eyebrow, though she kept walking without so much as a glance back.
"Honestly, I didn't expect that either," Andrea responded.
