"I heard you got booted from campus not just once, but twice, and all because of Kaia. Seriously, what kind of pull does she even have?" another person snickered.
Andrea was ready to tear Kaia down behind her back, but Lincoln and Ruth's warnings echoed in her mind. She clenched her jaw and bit back the urge, telling herself to let it go for now.
"Don't get it twisted. There's nothing between me and Kaia, we're total strangers now. Same goes for my parents and the entire Bennett family; we've cut ties with her completely," Andrea said stiffly.
The girl, apparently Andrea's classmate, called out loudly, making sure Kaia heard every word. "Oh, we know. Your dad went public with that video, and your mom gave her little speech, too.
"Honestly, it's probably for the best. Now you can finally wash your hands of that hopeless loser once and for all!"
Andrea clapped a hand over her classmate's mouth. "Quiet! She'll hear us!"
"That's just how I talk. Like I care if she hears me," the girl retorted.
"Don't—" Andrea was saying, but she froze when Kaia looked their way. She nearly jumped out of her skin, then started almost groveling with frantic nods and apologies.
"Sorry! Promise, we weren't talking about you, really, I didn't say a single bad word!" Andrea stammered.
Kaia shot Andrea a frosty look, then turned away, only to accidentally bump into a guy.
"Sorry, I wasn't watching where I was going," she said.
As she spoke, she realized it was Zion Larkin, one of the school's top students and one of the two campus heartthrobs.
Zion was completely absorbed in the strange-looking robot he was holding, not even sparing Kaia a glance as he walked right past her.
Andrea's classmate joked, "Kaia totally did that on purpose, trying to use her looks to flirt with Zion, but he didn't even bother acknowledging her."
"She must be dying of embarrassment right now. She's pretty, yeah, and even Larry treats her differently. But Zion is not like Larry, he's way harder to get close to," another classmate chimed in.
Someone scoffed. "Exactly! Zion is so aloof he barely talks to anyone. Even his roommates can't get a word out of him. Does Kaia really think every guy just falls at her feet?"
"I'm from the school news club. I'm gonna post this video on the campus forum so everyone can see just how shameless Kaia is," one of them said.
"I'm in!" another chimed in.
"Yeah, me too!" another added.
Kaia ignored all their trash talk, she wasn't bothered in the slightest. She was way more interested in that weird robot Zion had in his hands.
"Kaia, what are you looking at? Don't tell me you're crushing on the campus hottie now?" Penny whispered.
Kaia turned to give her an unamused look. "Which eye of yours saw that?"
"Both! I saw you eyeballing him with both your eyes!" Penny snickered.
"Not gonna play that word game with you. I seriously wasn't checking him out, I was way more interested in that funky robot he's holding," Kaia said.
"Come on, for real?" Penny squinted at her, but honestly, even Penny couldn't help sneaking a few glances at Zion herself. He really was next-level handsome.
Dude's got that icy vibe, but he was seriously a total heartthrob.
Kaia copied Penny's joking tone. "If you don't buy it, just lock eyes with me. Both of yours on mine, go ahead, see if you spot any lies."
"Alright, alright, I believe you!" Penny half-joked, patting her chest in relief. "If you ever like someone else, Tobias would probably bulldoze Morganburg University himself."
Just as Penny finished, a low, velvety voice slid into their conversation.
"Why on earth would I tear down Morganburg University?" Tobias asked, one eyebrow raised in confusion.
"Argh!" Penny practically jumped out of her skin, looking just like a startled cat.
She wondered whether he'd caught what they said just now.
