Penny quickly tugged at Kaia. "Look, Andrea just got totally snubbed."
"Does she even know her place? Always stealing other people's men, like she could ever catch the big boss's eye. Does she really think every guy out there is as clueless as Louis?" she added.
"Whatever's going on with her, it's none of our business. Let's go check out the competition exhibits," Kaia said.
As they walked on, Kaia kept scanning the exhibits, but nothing made her stop, until she paused in front of a robot that looked strangely familiar.
"Wait, isn't this robot familiar? I swear I've seen it somewhere..." Penny couldn't help sizing it up. Just then, Zion strolled over to the display, silent as ever, just standing there.
Obviously, it was his creation.
"That's why it felt so familiar. It's Zion's," Penny muttered quietly.
Kaia was checking out the robot, completely intrigued, and as she started to reach for it, an icy voice cut through the air, halting her mid-move. "You can look, but don't touch."
Kaia looked up, unfazed by his frosty tone. If anything, she could see that classic, laser-focused scientist vibe written all over his face.
"Why so harsh? Fine, we won't look. Kaia, let's go over there," Penny said, pulling her away, but Kaia didn't budge. Penny shot her a puzzled look. "What's wrong?"
Kaia hesitated for just a couple of seconds, then, almost on impulse, reached out and pressed her hand to the robot.
Zion's face went from calm to shock in the blink of an eye, darting forward to block her.
Joel, who'd been standing nearby, reacted instantly, grabbing Zion and holding him back. "Hey, no physical contact here!"
"Let go of me! She touched my project first! I wasn't going to hurt her, I just wanted her to stop messing with it!" Zion blurted out anxiously.
Just then, Kaia's voice cut through the tension. "This robot is probably designed to scan books, move them around, and even reach the top shelves in a library with that extendable arm."
Zion blinked, caught off guard. "How did you know that?"
"I just figured it out," Kaia said, as if it were plain as day. "Isn't it obvious?"
'Really?' Penny blinked, totally puzzled. She hadn't picked up on any of that, not even a little.
"But..." Kaia said, changing her tone. "The assembly is a bit clumsy, and it responds too slowly. Probably because the materials are too flimsy. The route could use better optimization, maybe borrow some dynamic obstacle avoidance and path-planning tech from AS-R mobile robots."
Zion was surprised Kaia could throw out all that tech jargon, but deep down, he didn't buy her critique at all.
"Excuse me, please step aside. The competition is about to start," he said, his voice still icy.
Not far away, Andrea and a few classmates were watching the whole scene unfold.
"Look at Kaia. She tried to bump into him on purpose earlier, but he didn't even notice her. Now she's just throwing herself at him again. Seriously, how shameless can she get?" one of them sneered.
Another responded, "She's always been this way. Zion's got eyes like a hawk. He spotted right off that Kaia is no decent person, so he's been ignoring her from the get-go."
"Andrea, seriously, don't ever say you even know her. It's just way too embarrassing," someone else added.
Andrea's lips moved slightly, but she was still reeling from Tobias's mysterious and intimidating background.
Five minutes later, the competition was finally underway.
Kaia lounged in her seat, watching entry after entry take the stage. Each one made her want to groan, and she just kept shaking her head.
