Stephen stood on stage, and all the contestants were nervously watching him. "I hereby announce that the first-place winner of this research competition is—"
Andrea was so nervous that her nails were digging into her palms.
Zion was also clenching his fists tightly, his eyes fixed on the card in Stephen's hand.
"Zion Larkin, congratulations!" With that single announcement, dreams were made for some and hearts were shattered for others.
Zion fought to hold back his excitement as he walked up to the stage and accepted his award.
Down in the audience, Andrea looked utterly defeated. In her mind, she kept chanting bitterly, 'That's it, it's all over. My revenge never even got off the ground... From now on, any chance to rise above, to prove myself, it's gone.'
Zion grabbed the mic from the host. "Professor Weaver, when can I start at the research institute?"
Stephen smiled. "You'll only need to come in on weekends so your classes won't be affected."
"Oh wow, that's awesome!" Zion nodded.
It was only Wednesday. Just three more days until he could step into the research institute and finally meet the legendary Dr. Bennett. After this, he'd call his family to share the news.
Meanwhile, Andrea drifted out of the competition hall all alone, looking like a stray dog with nowhere to go; defeated, broken, and hollow inside as she dragged herself back home.
"Andrea, you're back already? Is the contest over? Did you get first place?" Ruth bombarded her with anxious questions the moment she walked in.
Andrea just kept her head low, jaw locked tight, not making a sound.
"Why aren't you saying anything? Are you just pretending you lost to surprise us?" Ruth pressed, her voice full of hope.
To Ruth, Andrea was every mother's dream; smart, gifted, and especially brilliant in research, with former professors at Morganburg University singing her praises. In her mind, losing just wasn't in the cards.
The more Ruth went on, the more Andrea's face looked like she'd just been hit by a freight train.
Lincoln was the first to realize it. His voice was low but sharp. "Did you lose?"
Just hearing those words, Andrea couldn't hold it in anymore. Her tears started pouring down, one after another.
When Ruth saw this, her face totally crumpled. She dropped onto the sofa like her legs had given out. "Andrea, you didn't win? No way, how could you possibly lose?"
Ruth wailed, her voice trembling. "I've already told all the family about you entering the research contest today. I said you'd snatch the top spot for sure! And now you didn't win, what am I supposed to tell them? How am I supposed to face everyone?"
Speak of the devil, just as Ruth was lamenting, the butler swept in with a pack of relatives, all beaming and flooding the living room with congratulatory chatter.
"Wow, congratulations! You guys hit the jackpot with Andrea, she's a real prodigy," one of the relatives gushed.
"I'm so jealous! If my Phoebe could be even half as outstanding as Andrea, I'd sleep in sheer happiness every night," another joked.
"Seriously! Joy, your cousin Andrea's about to join Dr. Bennett's research institute. Stay over tonight, let her share some wisdom. Lucky you!" The compliments rolled on, the room bursting with excitement, blind to how pale and shaken Andrea looked.
Melvin and Emma shuffled out together, leaning on their canes, and instantly started showering Lincoln and Ruth with praise for their amazing parenting.
"Lincoln, Ruth, you two really raised a perfect daughter. We're so proud of you. From now on, you should get more involved in the family business, help out whenever you can," Melvin said, beaming.
Meanwhile, Johnny and Jason just shot each other bitter looks, jaws clenched tight. Lincoln's spot as the head of the Bennett family was basically locked in.
They couldn't compete, not with Andrea joining Dr. Bennett's legendary research institute.
With someone like Dr. Bennett backing Lincoln, even if he wanted to step down, no one would dare move against him.
