Lincoln and Ruth exchanged a glance. They'd meant to clear things up, but once the relatives barged in, the compliments just wouldn't stop. There was no chance to speak.
Just then, Phoebe suddenly shrieked, "Arghhh!"
"Quit that racket! Behave yourself," Melvin scolded sharply.
"Grandpa, Grandpa! Look at this, quick!" Phoebe waved her phone frantically in front of Melvin. "The top prize for the Morganburg University research contest didn't go to Andrea. It's Zion Larkin who won first place!"
"What? It's not Andrea? No way, how could it NOT be Andrea!" Melvin burst out.
"Seriously, I'm not joking! Just check your phones, see for yourselves," Phoebe urged, shoving her phone closer as if it was breaking news.
The whole room took out their phones in a frenzy, and the second the truth hit, everyone turned to stare at the Bennetts with stunned, almost gleeful smirks, like suddenly the spotlight was on the losers of the hour.
"Wow, that's a whole new level of shameless. Didn't win, but still tried to pull one over on all of us." One of the relatives laughed, throwing shade without mercy.
"For real! All that hype about Andrea, telling us to look up to her, always comparing us. What exactly are we supposed to learn? How to shamelessly lie through your teeth? Sorry, that's one masterclass I'll never be able to fake," another snarked, rolling their eyes.
"Same here. I might not have superb skills, but at least I keep it real! Honestly, if I can't do something, I'm not gonna brag like I'm God's gift or anything," a third relative added with arms crossed.
Andrea's face cycled through every color of the rainbow; red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, as if someone had hit fast-forward on her embarrassment and humiliation. She looked ready to explode.
Melvin snorted. "You must've picked up Kaia's bad habits; lying, bragging, acting like you can do everything. At least she's got something to show for it. She's Dr. Miracle. And you? Just a nerd with half-decent grades."
Emma cut in, her words even sharper. "Your grandpa is right. Kaia grew up in the boonies, covered in filth. But you, living under the Bennett family's roof, aren't any better. That lowly blood in you makes you just as worthless as Kaia. Don't think you're above her."
Andrea tried hard to keep her composure, glancing back at Lincoln and Ruth, only to see them deliberately keeping their distance like she was a ticking time bomb they didn't want blowing up in their faces.
Andrea wasn't really surprised. She'd figured out long ago, Lincoln and Ruth only ever cared about their reputation. The only reason they defended her, a daughter not even theirs by blood, was because she made them look good.
But Kaia, their true-born daughter, was constantly bringing shame on them wherever she went. That was why they couldn't stand her, kicking her out of the family just to save face.
It wasn't just Lincoln and Ruth, the whole Bennett family was infected with this opportunistic, show-off culture. If someone was useful, they'd be treated like royalty, but deep down, it was all about what one could do for the family.
If not, they were invisible. No one cared or even looked twice. In those people's eyes, being useless was worse than being a stray dog.
Somewhere else, Kaia didn't have a clue about what was happening with the Bennett family, and honestly, even if she found out, it was not like she'd care much anyway.
"Kaia, why don't you come over for dinner tonight? My mom's been missing you," Penny said, leading Kaia toward the school gate.
However, before Kaia could even answer, Zion stepped in front of her, blocking her path.
"You need something?" Kaia asked, sounding indifferent.
Zion frowned. "I gotta give it to you, you're seriously impressive. Guess I was kind of a jerk to you before, sorry about that."
"Don't sweat it, I barely remembered," Kaia replied, sounding completely indifferent.
"But... I don't get it. If you're that good, why didn't you bother entering the competition?" Zion asked, still baffled.
"Didn't see the need," Kaia answered with a casual shrug.
Zion's face instantly turned cold at Kaia's answer.
