"From the way you're talking, looks like you're not impressed with this competition," Zion said.
"You're reading too much into it. I just want to give someone else a chance," Kaia replied honestly.
Zion's expression grew even colder. "How is that any different from looking down on the competition?"
Kaia's brows furrowed slightly as she considered for a moment. "You'll get it when you visit the institute, I have my reasons for skipping this one."
"What are you trying to say?" Zion asked in confusion.
"You'll find out when you go this weekend." With that, Kaia dropped the argument with Zion and turned to Penny. "Let's head to your place."
"Sure, my mom is waiting for us at home," Penny replied.
"I'm tagging along," Tobias suddenly said, catching up to them.
Penny glanced back, blinking in surprise. "Wait, you're coming too?"
"What? Not happy I'm joining?" Tobias teased.
"No, no, of course not! The CEO of Moreno Group coming to our place? I'm more than happy to have you," Penny replied, letting out a quiet sigh of relief.
Penny's instincts screamed at her. If she ever dared to say no, she'd be in big trouble. No way she would risk provoking a boss like Tobias.
Tobias walked up to the car, just about to open the door for Kaia when his phone suddenly rang.
He picked up, shock and worry instantly flashed across his face.
Kaia spotted his expression and felt her heart skip a beat. "What's going on? Did something happen?"
"My grandpa just collapsed. They're rushing him to the hospital," Tobias said, his voice grave.
"What?! Keaton collapsed?" Kaia exclaimed.
Then, she turned to Penny. "Let your mom know, I really can't make it tonight."
"Don't worry about it! His health is way more important. Just go to the hospital, my mom will totally understand," Penny assured her.
So, Kaia said quickly, "I'm heading out now,"
She Kaia couldn't shake her worry the whole way to the hospital.
When they stopped at a red light, Tobias laid his hand over hers. "Don't worry. People like Grandpa have luck on their side, he's gonna be fine."
Feeling the strength and warmth of his hand, Kaia felt a strange calm settle over her. "You're right. he is a good man. Good things happen to good people, he'll be alright."
After a frantic twenty minutes, Kaia and Tobias stormed up to the hospital room door.
The moment they opened the door, Keaton's booming voice filled the room. "Checkmate! Ha! You lost!"
"Lost, my ass! Don't think I didn't notice you switching pieces behind my back when I wasn't looking!" Horace grumbled.
Kaia stepped in, still a bit stunned. "Wait, you're alright?"
"Seriously, what could possibly happen to that guy? Haven't you heard, the tough old troublemakers are the last ones standing," Horace joked from his own hospital bed.
"But... didn't your call say he'd collapsed?" Kaia pressed, still trying to wrap her head around it.
Fainting might not be a big deal for most people, but when it happens to someone elderly, especially someone like Keaton, one really couldn't take any chances.
"You wanna know what made him pass out?" Horace said, snickering to himself.
Keaton's old face was turning beet red. "You don't have to run your mouth."
"Oh, you don't want me to say it? All the more reason I will! Listen up, everyone, this old guy fainted because he broke his all-time favorite coffee pot and got so worked up about it," Horace announced with a big, mischievous grin.
'Wait, seriously? That's the reason?' She and Tobias just stared at each other, speechless.
"Man, that's hilarious!" Horace roared with laughter. "You fainted over a coffee pot? If anyone hears about this, you'll never live it down!"
"Hey, you just don't get it. If you loved coffee pots, you'd know how much that pot meant to me!" Keaton shot back.
Kaia couldn't help feeling even more puzzled. "Is there a story behind that coffee pot?"
