Keaton let out a long sigh. "That coffee pot was handcrafted by the Jasper Lawson himself. Only three ever existed, and the one I owned was the last surviving piece in the world."
Kaia's eyes widened in understanding. "So it really was a Jasper Lawson masterpiece. No wonder you treasured it so much."
"You know about coffee pots, too?" Tobias asked, a hint of surprise in his voice.
Kaia nodded modestly. "I know a thing or two."
Tobias knew her well; any time Kaia played it off like she just knew a little, she always turned out to be the real deal.
"Funny thing, I used to own a Jasper Lawson coffee pot myself," Kaia remarked.
Keaton nearly jumped out of his seat, excitement shining in his eyes. "You had one too? So, what happened to it?"
"I gave it away," Kaia replied offhandedly, and she couldn't miss the look of disappointment on Keaton's face.
At that moment, Horace spoke up. "You know, I heard there's going to be an antique coffee pot in the charity auction over in Axton tomorrow. Not sure exactly what kind, but that's the word going around."
As soon as Kaia left the hospital, she immediately called Conrad. "I'm heading to the charity auction tomorrow to check if there's a coffee pot up for bid."
"Miss Bennett, I was just about to call you. My grandfather passed away, so I have to leave town tonight. You'll have to handle the auction yourself," Conrad replied, his voice heavy with grief.
"Alright then, take care on the road," Kaia said.
Just before hanging up, Conrad added, "Oh, almost forgot, tomorrow's auction has a mask rule. Everyone has to wear one."
She nodded. "Got it."
The next day, Kaia showed up at the auction venue in Axton, her mask on tight. Walking with her was Scott, also masked up.
"Kaia, I'm really nervous," Scott murmured.
"I know big events like this are new territory for you. Just relax, you'll get the hang of it in no time," she said.
"Have you been to this kind of thing before?" Scott asked, sounding a little awestruck.
"Sort of. I've had my fair share," Kaia replied with a small shrug.
Scott looked at Kaia with a puzzled expression. She was only a few years older than him, and they both came from the same dirt-poor middle of nowhere. Yet somehow, she knew so much about everything, like she'd lived a completely different life.
Her network was packed with VIPs, each one more impressive than the last, and the places she showed up at were nothing short of elite gatherings.
Just as Kaia and Scott stepped inside, a sleek black Maybach pulled up out front.
Devin hopped out and opened the door. "Boss, we're here."
"Yeah." Tobias closed his laptop and stepped out of the car.
"Did you double-check everything? Can you confirm there's really a Jasper Lawson coffee pot at this auction?" Tobias asked.
"Absolutely. I asked around everywhere and got confirmation; the showstopper tonight is for sure a Jasper Lawson original," Devin said with total confidence.
Tobias never doubted Devin's abilities. If Devin wasn't up to the job, there was no way he'd still be working for him.
"Good. Whatever it takes, even if I have to pay a fortune, I'm winning that coffee pot tonight," Tobias said, resolve flashing in his eyes.
Meanwhile, Kaia already sat in the private room, waiting for the final showstopper of the night.
Scott watched the titans of the room keep shouting out higher and higher bids. Every jump made him feel like he was about to have a heart attack.
"Kaia, did you see that? Those white earrings just got sold for 1.5 million dollars! Just for a pair of earrings? Isn't that way overpriced?" Scott whispered, his voice shaking a little.
"Come on, it's nothing to freak out about. The people here are the real heavyweights, all the richest folks in the country. 1.5 million is just loose change to them. It's all just a game." Kaia shrugged.
"No way, seriously?" Scott gaped.
Kaia glanced at him. "You're my brother, don't sell yourself short. Not to mention, the outfit you're wearing was designed by Conrad Dorsey himself. It's easily worth 2 million dollars."
