"What?" Scott was so shocked he almost bit his tongue. He glanced down at his clothes, feeling like he was seriously wearing stacks of cash instead of fabric.
"If you see anything you want, just go for it," Kaia added casually.
Just then, a painting by Collin Crawford hit the auction block, starting at 10 million dollars.
'How can a single painting cost that much?' Scott was completely dumbfounded.
Kaia saw Scott's stunned face and figured he must really want it.
"33 million dollars," Kaia called out without hesitation.
Scott sucked in a sharp breath, almost choking on the air. "Kaia, do you actually want it?"
"I thought you liked it?" Kaia replied, raising an eyebrow.
Scott's mouth hung open in disbelief. While moved by Kaia's gesture, he hurried to clarify, "No, it's just... I'm shocked a painting can sell for that kind of money."
"Oh, that's all? Then I won't bother bidding," Kaia said casually. "Honestly, I know Collin Crawford. If I ever want one of his paintings, I can just ask him."
Kaia's words hit Scott like a ton of bricks again. He'd always known his sister was impressive, but the deeper he looked, the more he realized he barely knew just how extraordinary she really was.
Downstairs, Melvin and Emma were eyeing the private room where Kaia was sitting.
"Who is that, anyway? Throwing money around like it's nothing. If they've got cash to burn, why not bid on something else? Why do they have to fight us for it? Raising the price like that, how are we supposed to play?" Emma muttered, clearly pissed.
"Quiet," Melvin cautioned. "Everyone at this auction is some sort of VIP from every major city. We are only here because we pulled strings.
"The people in those private rooms? That's another league entirely. With this many people watching, if anyone overhears us trashing a big shot and they're having a bad day, the whole Bennett family could get dragged through the mud."
Emma clamped her mouth shut, glancing around to make sure nobody was paying them any attention, then finally let out a long breath.
"You're right, it's smarter to keep our mouths shut here. Still, it's frustrating. We can kiss the painting goodbye," she complained.
The more Emma thought about it, the angrier she got.
"If Kaia hadn't messed things up at that birthday party, they never would've ruined Collin Crawford's artwork. After that, we told her to ask him for another and she just flat-out refused," Emma griped.
"I don't think it's fair to blame Kaia for everything, honestly," Melvin replied.
Emma quickly snorted. "Seriously? Still sticking up for her? Don't tell me you still consider her part of our family."
"Are you kidding?" Melvin scoffed. "Someone that embarrassing? I wouldn't accept her as one of us even if hell froze over. Just knowing she's got Bennett blood in her makes me sick. If I could, I'd wipe every trace of her connection to us."
"Then why'd you say earlier it's not all her fault?" Emma pressed.
Melvin glanced at the painting on stage and explained, "Come on, you and I both know Kaia's got nowhere near enough pull to get Collin Crawford to paint for her. She obviously used some underhanded tricks on his granddaughter to make it happen.
"That only works once. If she really could get Crawford to paint again, she'd have done it already, just to keep us happy and stay in the family, right?"
"You know, you might be right. But hold up, aren't you forgetting something?" Emma said.
"Forget what?" Melvin shot back.
"Did you seriously forget that Kaia's also got that 'Dr. Miracle' rep?" Emma reminded him.
