Melvin let out a scoff. "That whole Dr. Miracle thing? It's just hype. She's twenty, still a college kid. You really think she's had time to master medicine? Learning that stuff takes decades. Honestly, Kaia just got lucky, probably cured some VIP's weird illness by accident."
"Didn't she fix you up too?" Emma asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Like I said, pure luck. She just happened to know one trick for my problem. Nothing special," Melvin grumbled.
No matter what, he just couldn't buy that Kaia was actually that skilled.
"Okay, enough about her. Just thinking about Kaia ticks me off. Anyway, Collin Crawford's art show is coming up. We'll go, be charming, and who knows, maybe we'll walk out with a painting," Melvin said, half-smiling at the thought.
"Totally, we'll make sure to schmooze him every chance we get," Emma chimed in.
"Achoo!" Back in the private room, Kaia sneezed out of nowhere.
"Whoa, you alright? Did you catch something?" Scott asked, shooting her a worried look.
"No worries, it's just a little itch in my nose." Kaia then glanced at the final item up for auction, her face lighting up with excitement.
'Just as I guessed, it's a coffee pot handcrafted by Jasper Lawson!' Kaia's heart skipped a beat as she recognized it. 'This coffee pot is mine for sure. No way I'm letting anyone else take it home!'
The auctioneer rambled on at the podium, then finally said, "Already told you plenty. If you know, you know, no more wasting time, let's kick this auction off!"
Inside the VIP lounge, Tobias locked his gaze on that coffee pot. It was the spitting image of the one his grandpa used to drink from every day. No doubt about it, this was the real deal.
"Devin, when the bidding starts, go all in. The price doesn't matter," Tobias told him.
"Understood," Devin answered.
The auctioneer continued, "This final item won't go to the highest bidder. Tonight, it's all about trading treasures. Bring out whatever you've got, and if the seller gives the thumbs-up, the deal is done."
As soon as he said that, the audience broke out in a wave of lively chatter.
"So, what can we actually trade for it?" someone shouted from the crowd.
The auctioneer shrugged. "Anything at all, the sky's the limit. Just keep making offers until the owner of the coffee pot gives the nod."
Somebody suddenly stood up. "I'll trade a pair of emerald bracelets!"
As soon as the words left his mouth, the room erupted in jeers and snickers.
"A pair of emerald bracelets for a coffee pot that's so rare you can't even put a price on it? The seller would have to be nuts to agree to that!" someone else said with a scoff.
"Oh, you think you're real clever? Why don't you put something up for trade, then? Let's see what magic you can pull!" the first bidder shot back.
"I'll trade a painting piece by Leo Harris!" the second bidder shouted.
Another guest snorted. "Oh, please. Leo Harris's work doesn't even come close to Collin Crawford's. Anyone who knows their stuff can tell that coffee pot is priceless. Not even ten of Crawford's paintings could buy it."
Melvin agreed deep down. No seller in their right mind would accept that trade.
"Crawford's paintings might be great collectibles, but compared to Lawson's coffee pot, they're practically worthless," Melvin said. "I wonder which heavy hitter will manage to snag it tonight."
Devin glanced at Tobias. "Sir, should we make a move?"
Tobias nodded. "Villa 12 at Pioneer Retreat."
"Understood," Devin answered loudly, announcing the offer to the floor.
Instantly, every eye in the room, including Kaia's, landed on Tobias's private suite.
"Looks like we've got a real heavy hitter here," Kaia muttered to herself.
"So, what do we do now? What should we put up for trade?" Scott urgently asked.
Kaia gave him a sly, confident grin and waved Scott over like she had everything under control.
