Scott leaned in close to listen, and the more he heard, the wider his eyes grew.
"Got it?" Kaia asked.
"Ye-yeah, I get it. I'm on it," Scott stammered.
Then, he hurried out of the private lounge and called out to the auctioneer on stage, "My boss wants to put something up for auction, but it's not for everyone's eyes."
The auctioneer reported the situation, got the go-ahead, and motioned for Scott to come over.
The whole crowd, Tobias included, eyed the suddenly appeared mystery guest. Everyone wanted to know what this person was bringing to the table. Whatever it was, it sure didn't look ordinary.
Scott leaned in and whispered, "I heard this auction is hosted by the Chandler family from Dalmore. The old man, Mr. Chandler, is pushing eighty and struggling with poor health. My boss says she can arrange for Dr. Miracle to provide lifetime in-home treatment for him."
The auctioneer's eyes went wide with shock. This was an offer so good, he didn't even need to check with anyone. There was zero chance the Chandler family would ever refuse.
"Alright!" the auctioneer exclaimed.
With a big grin, the auctioneer turned to the crowd. "And now, I'm pleased to announce the final item of the night, the famous coffee pot by Jasper Lawson goes to the lucky bidder in private lounge number 13!"
Which, of course, was where Kaia was seated.
As soon as the announcement was made, the whole crowd erupted in an uproar. Whispers flew as people tried to guess who the powerhouse in lounge 13 could possibly be. Judging by the auctioneer's expression, it looked like they'd just scored the steal of the century.
Tobias's brows knitted together. After two seconds of tense silence, he got to his feet.
"Sir? We just gonna leave like that?" Devin blurted out, totally baffled.
Devin thought to himself, 'Losing without a fight? That's so not my style.'
"To lounge 13," Tobias threw out, his voice brooking no arguments. With his usual don't-get-close vibe, he strode off toward the suite next door.
Kaia was just about to push the door open when she saw Tobias standing in the doorway, still wearing his mask.
"What's going on?" she asked.
Tobias glanced into the lounge. "Mind if we have a chat?"
If it were anyone else, Kaia would have probably brushed them off. But this guy gave her a weird sense of closeness, like they'd known each other forever, and she just couldn't bring herself to say no.
"Yeah, come on in," she replied.
The two sat facing each other, tension thick in the air.
Kaia couldn't help but study Tobias behind her mask, and he was watching her just as intently. Even though Kaia carefully disguised her voice, Tobias could tell right away, this girl wasn't much older than a teenager.
Tobias found it odd. Despite the mask and the altered voice, there was something about her that felt strangely familiar.
Kaia didn't bother with small talk. She leaned forward and said, "Just say what you want."
Tobias pulled his eyes from Kaia and stared at the coffee pot sitting on the table, his expression sharpening.
"That coffee pot is seriously important to me," Tobias said firmly. "Say your terms, whatever you want. If it's within my power, it's yours."
Kaia had already long since seen through what Tobias was really after.
"Sorry, but this coffee pot is truly irreplaceable to me. It's not something money can buy, or that any treasure could ever match. So I can't give it up," she replied, unwavering.
Tobias pressed his lips together. "Not even a bit of wiggle room?"
"I get that you want it," Kaia said. "If it were just for me, I'd hand it over. But it's for an older relative, he treasures it more than anything. Without it, his days might feel empty, even to the end."
With Kaia saying that, Tobias knew the door was closed. He wouldn't be getting his hands on it.
"Sorry for bothering you," he said, getting to his feet.
"Wait a second," Kaia called out, stopping him.
Tobias paused at the door. "Yeah? What?"
