Kaia flashed a gentle smile. "Since you came all this way, how about sharing a drink before you go? We'll use the coffee pot."
If it had been anyone else inviting him, Tobias would've just brushed them off without even hesitating. But facing this girl, he didn't know why, saying no felt almost impossible.
"Alright," he replied.
'Wait, he actually said yes?' Devin was in disbelief, eyes wide with surprise.
Except for Kaia, Devin had never once seen his boss act this considerate towards any woman. This was a total first.
'Could he just be into her looks or something?' Devin thought suspiciously. 'But she's wearing a mask! Sure, the figure is on point, but that doesn't guarantee her face is any kind of knockout.
'Or is he just pulling out the handsome guy card to get that coffee pot?
'Seriously, if he's gonna use the face card, shouldn't he at least take off the damn mask first?'
Kaia glanced over at Scott. "Go get some hot water."
"On it," Scott said, and came back quickly with a kettle.
Kaia took the kettle, opened up the coffee pot, and poured the hot water straight in.
"You're not putting in any coffee?" Tobias asked, curiosity written all over his face.
Kaia gave him a playful, secretive smile. "Just wait, you'll find out soon enough."
Tobias was already so intrigued by this mysterious girl, but seeing her unusual method made him even more curious.
In just a few moments, the scent of coffee began wafting out from the coffee pot's spout.
"Wait, where's that coffee smell coming from? You didn't put any coffee powder in," Tobias asked.
As Kaia poured him a cup, she said, "This old coffee pot's been used by a family for generations. The clay is soaked up years of flavor, so now, even without coffee, a little hot water is enough to bring out the aroma."
"Honestly, I didn't expect someone so young to be so knowledgeable," Tobias admitted.
As the words left his mouth, Tobias's mind immediately jumped to Kaia. She was young too, and always seemed to know a lot.
"You're too kind," Kaia replied humbly. "I only know a thing or two about this stuff."
"A thing or two..." Tobias repeated softly, the expression triggering a memory. Just yesterday at the hospital, he'd asked Kaia if she understood coffee pots.
She had given him the same answer, "I know a thing or two."
For a moment, Tobias drifted away, his mind completely captured by thoughts of Kaia.
And suddenly, an intense longing welled up inside him. He just needed to see her, right now.
To be apart from Kaia even for a heartbeat felt like endless years. Deep down, Tobias realized; he'd never be able to let her go, not in this lifetime.
After a few seconds, Tobias regained his composure and fixed his searching gaze on the girl in front of him again.
"Honestly, you really remind me of a friend," he said.
Kaia's eyes lit up subtly at his words. "Same here. You seem a lot like someone I know."
They exchanged a look, and with each passing moment, that strange sense of familiarity grew stronger between them.
"Why don't we swap WhatsApp? If your relative ever decides to part with that coffee pot, you know who to call," Tobias said, still clearly not over it.
Kaia considered it for a moment, then pulled out her phone. "Sure. I'd actually love to be friends with you. Just a heads up, that person has a real thing for coffee pots, especially Jasper Lawson's works. There are only three left in existence."
She kept silent about the fact that, since Keaton smashed one, there were really only two now.
"So honestly, I doubt there'll ever be a chance for you," she added with a tiny shrug.
"Hey, never say never, maybe luck will be on my side someday," Tobias replied, stubbornly hopeful.
Kaia raised an eyebrow. Since Tobias was so insistent, she decided not to ruin his mood.
"Let's just swap WhatsApp numbers," she suggested with a half-smile.
"So, should I get your number, or do you want to save mine?" Tobias asked.
"I'll save yours," Kaia replied, phone already in hand.
"Cool," Tobias said, showing up his phone number on his screen. "All set, here, save my number."
If it had been anyone else inviting him, Tobias would've just brushed them off without even hesitating. But facing this girl, he didn't know why, saying no felt almost impossible.
