Kaia was just about to start typing when her phone suddenly started ringing.
"Oh, sorry, let me get this real quick—" she said.
But before she even finished her sentence, Tobias's phone started ringing too, interrupting her. "I need to take this call too."
Kaia nodded, picked up her phone, and answered, "What? He fainted again?"
Tobias's phone call was from the hospital too, they told him Keaton had just passed out again.
"Alright, I'll be there right away," Kaia and Tobias replied in perfect sync.
Finishing their words, the two locked eyes, a little thrown by how perfectly timed they were.
"Sorry, I've really got to run," Kaia said, grabbing her things.
"Same here," Tobias added hurriedly.
They both rushed out their separate ways. Later, back in Morganburg, Kaia and Tobias arrived at the hospital entrance at almost the exact same moment.
Seeing Keaton Moreno lying weak and pale on the hospital bed, Kaia rushed over and checked his pulse. "How did his condition get so bad all of a sudden?"
Horace, standing close by, snarked, "Wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for that whole coffee pot fiasco."
"No, stop, stop with your nonsense," Keaton whispered, barely getting the words out.
Horace scoffed. "Look at you, still trying to glare at me? Spare yourself the effort, old man."
"So what exactly happened?" Kaia asked again.
Horace explained, "Our rooms are next to each other. I got bored and dropped by to check on him. I found him trying to fix the coffee pot, but he kept messing it up and made it worse. He got so mad he passed out again."
'So that's what happened.' Tobias's face was tight with guilt; it was written all over him. 'If only I'd just saved that coffee pot!'
Right then, Kaia suddenly took out a box and handed it to Keaton. "Well, well, guess what this is?"
Seeing the coffee pot quietly sitting in the box, Tobias's eyes grew wide in disbelief. He instantly snapped his head toward Kaia, totally floored.
Realization hitting him. 'No wonder I kept thinking that masked girl seemed so familiar, like I wanted to get closer to her.'
"No way! This is... this is Mr. Jasper Lawson's coffee pot! It's exactly the same as the one I used to have!" Keaton blurted out.
In that moment, it was like all his sickness had vanished. He shot up from the bed and hugged the coffee pot so tight, his hands trembling uncontrollably. He looked like he might burst into tears any second.
"Hey Keaton, take it easy! Don't get so hyped, or you'll end up breaking that coffee pot all over again!" Horace joked with a smirk.
"Oh, shut up with your jinxes! If my precious coffee pot gets smashed again, it's on you and your cursed mouth, I swear I'll hunt you down!" Keaton retorted, glowering.
Watching Keaton cradle the coffee pot like it was some priceless treasure, Kaia's face broke into a relieved smile. Every bit of effort was worth it.
"Come outside with me for a minute," Tobias said, reaching for Kaia's arm.
"What for?" she asked.
"Just come, I'll explain outside," he replied.
"Okay," Kaia said, still a little confused, as she followed Tobias out.
As soon as they stepped outside, Tobias cornered her against the wall with a classic wall slam, trapping her with his arms.
"Seriously, Tobias? Are you crazy or something?" Kaia was completely caught off guard.
"You lied to me," Tobias said, his eyes brimming with grievance and hurt as he stared at her.
Kaia blinked. "What are you even talking about? How did I lie to you?"
"You lied to me. You said you only knew a little about the coffee pot," Tobias accused.
Kaia was even more confused. "Seriously, I really only know a bit! Why are you suddenly grilling me about this?"
Tobias cut straight to the point. "Because someone just made coffee with nothing but plain water in a family heirloom coffee pot, and it smelled absolutely incredible."
