Kaia's eyes widened in shock, locking her gaze on Tobias, completely floored. "You... you were that man!"
"Yeah, it's me. Crazy, right? I was stunned too, but then, not really. Guess I always felt drawn to you for a reason. Turns out, it was you all along." Tobias's tone was soft and strangely warm.
The more Tobias looked at Kaia, the more he found himself totally hooked. "You never stop surprising me. Seriously, just tell me, what else are you secretly amazing at? I'm dying to know everything about you."
"Honestly, no one ever believes me. I'm really not good at much. If I had to choose, it's just that one thing," Kaia muttered, massaging her forehead with a sigh.
"What thing? Seriously, just tell me already! I'm begging here!" Tobias insisted, his curiosity almost bursting.
"Not telling you yet." Kaia just crossed her arms with a stubborn look.
Tobias flashed her a playful, mischievous grin. "I get it now, you only said you were good at that one thing just to tease me, didn't you? You little rascal."
Before she could react, Tobias leaned in and playfully nipped at Kaia's lips.
"Ow—what was that for?" Kaia protested, cheeks instantly burning red as a tingling shiver ran through her.
"It's your punishment, obviously. Who told you to be such a little troublemaker?" Tobias chuckled.
As he spoke, Tobias was utterly transfixed, eyes locked onto her lips, admiring the spot where his teeth had left their mark.
Her mouth was soft, plump, and pink, but now with the clear bite mark turning her lips even redder, they looked just like ripe cherries, so irresistible that he almost couldn't stop himself from leaning in for another taste.
Kaia pushed against Tobias's chest, forcing him to step back and give her some space. "Are you part dog or something? Seriously, biting people now?"
Tobias lifted his hand and gently touched his lips with his fingertips, as if savoring the taste of her still lingering there.
He looked so satisfyingly lost in the moment that Kaia's face went redder than ever, embarrassment burning across her cheeks.
"Get lost!" Kaia brushed past him, storming off in a huff.
Watching her stomp away with her hair bristled, Tobias couldn't help but burst out laughing, his voice echoing behind her.
Kaia wasn't even a few steps away when she heard his laughter, and for a second, she seriously considered spinning around and socking him twice.
But then she thought, 'With him, if I really did that, he'd probably just say hitting means I care and beg me to hit him a bit harder. Typical.'
So, Kaia just sighed, rubbing her forehead in defeat. 'Whatever, not gonna waste my time arguing with a shameless troublemaker.'
On the weekend, Kaia arrived at the research center early and started organizing her recent research files.
"Dr. Bennett, the new recruit will be here any minute. Do you want to meet him yourself?" Stephen asked.
"Yes, bring him over as soon as he arrives," Kaia replied.
"Understood." Stephen nodded.
Right now, Zion was standing outside the research center, absolutely buzzing with excitement.
This was seriously the dream destination for every science nerd in Wustriland. He'd always imagined what it would be like to actually break into this industry, and if he ever, by some miracle, landed a spot in Dr. Bennett's institute, he'd die happy, no regrets.
He never guessed he'd get this chance while still a junior.
Zion pressed a palm to his chest, feeling his heart thundering, ready to leap out.
He took a deep breath, steadied himself, and marched up to the door.
"Pass, please," the security guard said.
"I—I'm with Morganburg University, I—I'm the campus science tournament winner, I—" Zion's words tripping over each other as he got more and more flustered.
He was usually calm and collected, but here, at his age and in such an intimidating place, pretending to be experienced was impossible.
Just then, Stephen came out.
"Finally, you're here! Come on, let's go inside. Dr. Bennett is waiting for you," he said.
