"Dr. Be-Bennett is wa-waiting for me!" Zion stuttered even harder this time, the words tumbling out of his mouth in a total mess.
Honestly, no one could blame him; Dr. Bennett was a living legend. Anyone in his shoes would be starstruck.
"O-Okay, okay." Zion finally managed, feeling like he was floating on air, his head in the clouds and his thoughts stuck in a loop.
Then, he followed Stephen all the way to Kaia's lab.
Kaia was hunched over her research notes, closely watching the reactions bubbling in her test tubes.
"Dr. Bennett, the new guy's here," Stephen said softly, careful not to interrupt her focus.
"Okay, I know," Kaia replied. She set down her files and turned around.
"You?!" Zion exclaimed, losing his composure for the first time. He stood there, gaping, utterly astonished.
He wouldn't have believed it if he weren't seeing it: the legendary Dr. Bennett was a student at Morganburg University, and she was his classmate. Zion's head was spinning.
This was seriously next-level crazy. Zion was convinced that if Kaia's secret ever went public, the entire school would be so shocked their jaws would drop to the ground.
Kaia flashed Zion a warm smile. "So, now you get why I said what I did that day, huh?"
"I'm really sorry!" Zion hung his head low, looking flustered. "I shouldn't have treated you that way, Dr. Bennett."
Kaia just waved her hand dismissively. "Don't sweat it. You only said those things because you didn't know. It's totally fine, forget about it."
Watching Kaia's easygoing generosity and calm demeanor, Zion just felt she was on a whole different level from everyone else. The respect he had for her deepened even further.
"From now on, you'll be my assistant," Kaia said.
Stephen couldn't hide his envy. He slapped Zion on the shoulder. "Kid, it must be your lucky day. You haven't even graduated and already get to work with Dr. Bennett herself! Honestly, I'd trade lives with you in a heartbeat!"
Feeling Stephen's heavy hand, Zion knew this wasn't just some empty compliment, Stephen really did wish he could take his place.
And Zion was fully aware: opportunities like this came once in a blue moon. He'd started out just a promising student in research, but overnight, he'd skipped straight to being the right-hand guy to the number one scientist in the game.
'What an incredible honor!' Zion thought, still struggling to believe his own luck.
The next day, as soon as the school assembly wrapped up, Zion found himself surrounded by a bunch of curious students.
"Zion, did you meet Dr. Bennett? Is she good-looking? Be honest, how pretty is she?" someone asked.
Another scoffed. "Come on, is that really what matters? Dr. Bennett is not a movie star, who cares if she's pretty?"
"Yeah, she's known for her brains, not her beauty. People admire her for her achievements, not her looks," somebody else added.
Hearing that, Zion couldn't help but think to himself, 'Honestly, if Dr. Bennett wanted to, she could totally make it big just on her looks alone.'
"Zion, come on, say something! Did you actually meet Dr. Bennett? What's she like? How old is she, really?" a girl pressed, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
Just as she finished, Kaia's voice suddenly cut in from behind. "Excuse me, you're blocking the way. Could you please move?"
The girl shot Kaia an annoyed look. "Can't you see I'm talking to Zion? And it's about Dr. Bennett! Can't you just wait? Don't you want to hear what he has to say? Don't you care about Dr. Bennett at all?"
