After five more minutes, he was basically a statue, eyes locked on her and stubborn as ever.
Ten minutes went by, and Kaia was half convinced Tobias had officially turned to stone.
Facing this kind of Tobias, Kaia couldn't help it. She had to admit defeat and finally caved, just a little.
"No way am I kissing you. Pick something else," Kaia said.
Tobias just curved his lips into a playful smirk and pointed at the food. "Then feed me. That works too."
Kaia couldn't help rolling her eyes and buried her head in her food again.
Just when Tobias looked about ready to give up, Kaia snatched up a giant piece of spinach and, with zero warning, stuffed it straight into his mouth.
Of course, spinach was the one thing he absolutely hated. She knew that, and yeah, she totally did it on purpose.
Kaia watched Tobias stare, dumbfounded, and snickered. "Eat up! What's wrong? Didn't you want me to feed you? Well, I'm feeding you now, so why the hesitation? Or worried my spoon isn't royal enough for your taste?"
No sooner had Kaia finished than Tobias begrudgingly started chewing the mouthful of spinach.
"Mmm, tastes way better than usual. Of course, anything my girl personally feeds me must be top-tier," Tobias said, flashing a smug, sweet grin.
Kaia took a deep breath. 'Honestly, there's just no winning against him. I totally give up.'
After dinner, Kaia's phone lit up with a call from Joel. "My family just called, my dad was in a car accident and he's in the hospital. I need to rush back."
Kaia instantly tensed up. "How serious is it? Do you want me to come over?"
"No worries, it's not too bad," Joel replied.
"Seriously, don't hold back. If things get worse, promise you'll let me know," Kaia insisted.
"Alright." Joel nodded, but his brows knitted together. "It's just that my hometown is so far away, I probably won't be back for at least a week."
"Don't rush back. Just stay with your family and take care of things," Kaia said.
"But a while ago, the SR Alliance got word that someone's trying to take you out. There's been no action lately, but I'm worried it's just the calm before the storm," Joel said with concern.
Kaia just shrugged it off with a grin. "If they come for me, I'll handle it. And even if you're not here, I've still got plenty of people watching my back."
"I've already arranged for Gideon to be your personal bodyguard. He'll be on the job in a few days," Joel said.
"Just handle it as you see fit." Kaia knew that if she didn't let Joel take charge, he wouldn't rest easy back home.
"Alright then, I'll hang up," Joel said.
"Okay," Kaia replied.
As soon as she hung up, her phone immediately rang again.
"Hey Kaia, no one's been messing with you lately, right?" Gavyn asked.
Kaia blinked, caught off guard. "Why are you asking me that out of nowhere?"
Gavyn had no idea she was actually Dr. Bennett, much less that anyone was targeting her, so his sudden question left her a little confused.
"Sheesh, man." Gavyn clicked his tongue.
That just made Kaia even more intrigued. She could tell Gavyn was holding something juicy back.
"Come on, quit beating around the bush. What's up?" Kaia pressed.
"Alright, alright," Gavyn let out a heavy sigh. "My ex-girlfriend is coming back to town, and she wants to try and patch things up with me."
Kaia perked up, clearly entertained. "Go on, spill."
"So, remember how all that drama blew up between us not long ago? Even though I publicly explained that you're engaged to my nephew, my ex thinks I'm just trying to cover up the truth and insists we're secretly hooking up.
"I just warned her over the phone to leave you alone, but instead she got even more spiteful. She swore she's coming back and is dead set on making you pay!" Gavyn groaned.
