"My friend posted it on the campus network, but it got blocked in minutes. Then the dean called him in, saying there was zero evidence. Just because he saw Kaia bump into Zion, he went around claiming she was trying to seduce him. The dean called it out for being way out of line and made him write a ten-thousand-word apology."
"Wait, a ten-thousand-word apology letter? That's nuts! Did he actually go through with it?"
"If he refused, he'd get kicked out. Seriously, what do you think he'd choose?"
"Damn, that's harsh. So, you're saying the campus's actually shielding Kaia?"
"I doubt it. Even if Kaia's a top student, a real academic star, the prestigious university wouldn't normally protect someone so insignificant. In my opinion, it's mostly because Kaia is one of our own. Without solid evidence, the school wouldn't make the punishment public, since it's also a matter of the university's reputation."
"That makes sense. So, unless we can prove Kaia was actually trying to seduce and threaten Gavyn, even if we all go to the campus administration together, it won't do any good?"
"Most likely. But there's no need to worry — justice will catch up sooner or later. With Kaia causing so much trouble, her day of reckoning will come. We just have to wait and watch."
"Exactly!"
Penny couldn't take it anymore and jumped to her feet.
"Wait." Kaia reached out and gently tugged at her. "They're right. Justice has a way of catching up. People causing trouble may act arrogant now, but just wait — their day of reckoning will come."
"Ah!" Penny clawed at her hair in wild frustration. "Let's go grab some food. My treat! We're hitting the town and eating till we're stuffed, just trying to forget about all this drama."
"Sounds good," Kaia grinned.
They kept eating and drinking until nine, both a little buzzed and flushed from the alcohol.
"Penny, do you want me to take you home first?" Kaia asked.
"Nah, I'm good—I can see straight, no problem. But with all the drama around your situation... Isn't Joel usually near you?" Penny looked around curiously.
"He went back to his hometown," Kaia replied.
"What about your man?" Penny teased.
Kaia rolled her eyes. "We're not there yet, alright?"
"Oh, it's about time, it'll be soon," Penny teased with a playful smile. "But seriously, why hasn't he shown up yet?"
"He's out of town on business and won't be back until tomorrow afternoon," Kaia replied.
"That explains why it was so chill tonight. Usually, whenever you go out with someone—doesn't matter if it's a guy, a girl, anybody—your phone's always blowing up," Penny said.
"Enough with the teasing. Go on, get home," Kaia said.
Kaia waved down a cab for Penny, sent her off, then jogged home instead of catching a ride.
As she ran, her phone buzzed—it was Joel calling.
"I'm home," Joel said.
"Good. How's your uncle doing?" Kaia asked.
"Like I said before, nothing serious. I'll come back in a few days." Then Joel's voice turned serious.
"Wilson just messaged me. The person who previously posted the mission in the SR Alliance has now posted it in another alliance. The SR Alliance can't take action, but the other alliance doesn't know who you are. And even if they did, they'd probably turn a blind eye for the money," Joel said.
Kaia frowned. "How come Wilson never mentioned this before?"
"Maybe he didn't want you to worry," Joel said.
"Yeah," Kaia nodded, but just then she spun around, snapping,
"Who's there?" Kaia demanded.
She'd just caught the faintest sound of movement behind her.
