She'd picked this empty side street so she could clear her head and avoid running into anyone.
She realized there were several footsteps behind her—not just one or two. By her estimate, at least twenty or thirty people were closing in.
Joel's voice grew tense on the line, "What's happening? Are assassins after you?"
Joel regretted it. If he had known this would happen as soon as he left, there was no way he would have returned home.
"I don't know. They're keeping themselves hidden. I'm cutting the call to stay sharp," Kaia said and ended the call immediately.
Joel was pacing like a caged animal, anxiety gnawing at him. The guy he'd handpicked, Gideon, wouldn't be able to get there for at least two or three days.
Looks like I'll have to call him now.' Joel thought.
Without wasting another second, Joel dialed the number.
Kaia stared hard at the bushes, every nerve on edge. "You came all the way here, just to hide around in the shadows? Are you afraid people will see what kind of shady business you're up to?"
She waited, but nobody answered.
Kaia narrowed her eyes slightly. "If you don't come out now, I'm leaving."
That did the trick—the whole crowd lurking in the dark finally stepped into the light at once.
Kaia was surprised—not a single one of them bothered to cover their faces or hide who they were. And leading the pack was an unnervingly attractive woman, standing out without a shred of disguise.
'Weird... why do I feel like I've seen her around before?' Kaia ran through her mental list, trying to place that face.
The woman wore sleek combat gear, her chin raised in a show of cool confidence, eyes fixed on Kaia like she was sizing her up for a challenge.
"You're Kaia?" the woman asked.
"With all this… who exactly are you?" Kaia fired back.
Kaia's gut told her these weren't the assassins Joel had warned her about.
Assassins never showed up with bare faces and yak this much.
"You actually asked me who I am? You don't know who I am? Stop pretending," the woman snapped, her voice bristling with anger.
Kaia let out a mocking laugh. "I'll admit you're not bad-looking, but you're not famous enough for everyone to know you. I just don't know you, that's all."
"You—" The woman sucked in a sharp breath, practically shaking with rage. "Fine, you want to play dumb? No wonder Gavyn fell for you. That level of scheming and cunning isn't something ordinary people can match."
The way she laid it all out, only an idiot wouldn't recognize who she was.
"Kiera, Gavyn's ex-girlfriend, right? Bringing a whole squad just to make me back off from whatever drama you think exists between you two. Let me tell you, don't overthink it—Gavyn and I are just friends, plain and simple. If you're finished with this little show, take your people and get out of my way."
Kiera let out a sharp laugh. "Really, who's the smart one here—me or you? You think a couple of lines will get rid of me? Do you take me for an idiot?"
Kaia pinched her brow, shooting Kiera an openly scornful look. "Honestly? I totally think you're not that bright."
Kiera's eyes narrowed dangerously. "I've gone my whole life without anyone daring to talk to me like that. You must have a screw loose, or just a death wish. And just so you know, I'm not here to admire your guts—I actually pity you, because you're about to pay the price for mouthing off."
With that, Kiera gave a sharp gesture to the people behind her.
