"You dare?" Zane spat, every word dripping with threat.
Devin and his men closed in, their fists raised. Without another word, they rushed over and started hitting them.
Punches and kicks came from all directions—Zane was completely battered, too overwhelmed to defend himself.
"You lowly servants — how dare you lay hands on me! You're asking for death!" Zane howled, voice cracking with fury.
But Devin and the rest weren't worried in the slightest—they all knew Kaia was Tobias's world.
She was even more important than their boss's own life.
So they didn't care about anything else and went all in, swinging for blood with zero hesitation.
"Uncle Zane! Save me, ah! Don't hit my face!" Kiera screamed, her face covered in bruises, black and blue all over.
With all those agonized screams erupting one after another, Kaia could tell how brutal the scene was.
"The Moreno and Yates families are long-time allies; is behaving like this really proper?" Kaia asked.
Tobias wrapped his arm around Kaia's waist, holding her with the gentlest touch, terrified of hurting her even a little more.
"If Grandpa found out the Yates family tried to mess with you, he'd be the first one cheering me on," Tobias said, voice solid as steel.
He paused for a second, then raised an eyebrow. "What, don't tell me you're actually feeling sorry for them?"
Kaia scoffed, rolling her eyes. "You really think I'm just a person full of sympathy?"
"Yeah, you are. To me, you're so delicate that you can barely take care of yourself—like a willow swaying in the breeze, a flower trembling in the water," Tobias said seriously.
Devin almost forgot how to throw a punch when he heard that.
Are you kidding me? Boss, didn't you see that Kiera's arm got hurt? And Kiera's men were beaten up by Kaia—some had bruised faces, a few had broken ribs, some were limping, and noses were crooked.'
And Kaia was almost keeping up even though she couldn't see well.'
'This is completely crazy!' Devin thought, shaking his head
He felt that if he really gave it his all, there was a good chance Kaia would beat him flat on the ground.
Kaia just stared at Tobias, lips slightly parted and cheeks flushing bright red. She was dying to ask, 'Seriously, are you talking about me?' If he called her a badass, fine, she could live with that. But turning her into some delicate, tragic beauty, that was impossible.
"Take me home first. I have some medicine there, and I want to clean my eyes first." Kaia said, her voice a bit unsteady.
As the minutes passed, Kaia's eyes were burning even worse, stinging and making her miserable.
"I'd better take you to the hospital." Tobias's worried brows furrowed tightly. "There's a hospital just ahead—it's only a five-minute drive."
"Alright, let's just go to the hospital," Kaia said.
Soon enough, Kaia was led into the exam room.
Tobias waited anxiously at the door when Joel called.
"How's it going? Wait, why are you answering? Where's Kaia? Is she okay? Why isn't she picking up?" Joel's voice was getting more and more frantic with every word.
Tobias's eyes narrowed thoughtfully. After a quiet a few second pause, he answered, "She's at the hospital, getting checked out."
"The hospital?" Joel practically yelled, his voice shot up to the maximum.
"What happened to her? Is she hurt? How bad is it? Where did she get hurt? Why won't you answer me—just tell me!" Joel fired off.
Tobias's gaze darkened, suspicion cutting through his tone. "You care way too much for someone who's supposed to be just a friend. Even if she saved your life once, that doesn't explain how worked up you are. Or is there something between you two you don't want me to know about?"
'Damn…!' Joel cursed in his heart, realizing he'd let his panic blow his cover way too fast.
