Now that Joel had taken a step back and looked at things coolly. It was clear: if something really bad had happened to Kaia, Tobias wouldn't be sitting here talking so calmly. There's no way he'd have the space in his head to be curious about Joel's unusual relationship with Kaia.
"If you don't want to tell me, I won't push. I believe in Kaia. She'll tell me everything in her own time," Tobias said.
Joel let out a long sigh of relief when he heard Tobias say that.
"So, how is she really?" Joel asked.
"For now, it's just a cut on her arm from a knife. I'll update you about anything else after the doctors run some more tests," Tobias replied.
"Anything else?" Joel's voice shot up again.
Tobias had to pull the phone away from his ear; Joel's voice was so loud that it was hurting his eardrums.
Just then, the door to the exam room swung open.
"Kaia's come out. We'll talk later." Tobias said.
With that, he hung up.
As soon as Tobias saw Kaia, he hurried over to her.
"How are your eyes now?" he asked.
"The doctor says it's nothing major, but I'll need to rest for about a week before my vision fully recovers."
"A whole week? That's pretty serious," Tobias thought, his heart tightening with worry.
Just then, his phone rang. It was Keaton.
"I heard that Kaia was attacked by that wretched girl from the Yates family. How is she now? Nothing too serious, right?"
"She got hurt on her arm," Tobias replied.
"What?" Keaton burst out furiously. "Did she bleed?"
"Yeah," Tobias said.
"Damn it! Who dares mess with her? Somebody's asking for trouble!" Keaton's hand was actually trembling in fury. "I'm calling your dad, every uncle, the entire Moreno family. We're all heading straight over to the Yates family house. Today, we're not leaving until they pay it!"
Tobias had originally planned to go there himself, but seeing Kaia's current condition — clearly in need of care — he decided to stay. Besides, since his grandfather was personally taking action, with that domineering and fiery temper of his, the Yates family was bound to suffer a heavy blow today.
Before Tobias could even put down his phone, Joel's call came through in a rush.
"How is Kaia?" Joel demanded.
Tobias didn't beat around the bush. "She was sprayed with some extra-strength pepper spray. It's going to take her about a week for her eyesight to fully recover."
"A week? Are you serious?" Joel practically shouted.
He was so furious that he punched a nearby tree, knocking it down with a single blow.
Kaia was the backbone of the country's scientific research. There's no way her eyes could be put at risk. The Yates family had to be held accountable to the country today.
Joel immediately called the relevant government department. "Hello, Dr. Bennett has been attacked. She's temporarily lost her sight in both eyes..."
The person on the other end was so shocked that they almost lost their mind. "Who? Who would dare attack Dr. Bennett?"
"It was the Yates family," Joel said.

Kiera, clutching the arm that had just been reattached, cursed under her breath as she made her way home.
"Damn! What kind of spell did Kaia cast on Gavyn to make him get Tobias to go all out for her?" Kiera fumed.
Zane looked absolutely embarrassed, his face turning sickly pale with shame. He'd never been this humiliated in his entire life.
As the head of the family, Victor, furious at his son's uselessness, hurled the cup in his hand straight at Zane.
Zane was still nursing wounds and didn't stand a chance; the cup smacked him square in the face.
"What a useless loser! How could I end up with a son as hopeless as you? I told you to watch your niece, and not only did you mess that up, you managed to get yourself hurt too. You ruin the Yates family's reputation!" Victor screamed, his fury exploding again every time he looked at Zane.
Victor was beyond pissed. Just looking at Zane made his blood pressure spike even higher.
