Listening to Kiera break it all down, Victor found himself nodding along—it actually made sense.
"Fine!" Keaton was done wasting his breath. "Looks like this matter isn't over today. Let's go — we'll issue an announcement and completely cut ties with the Kuang family!"
Victor knew that splitting up would hurt both families, but there was no way he could just stand by and watch his granddaughter get wronged.
Just then, his phone buzzed. It was someone from up top calling. His face instantly turned serious and respectful.
"Hello?" Victor answered.
"Victor! You've got some nerve! How could you stand by while your granddaughter did something so unforgivable?" The voice on the other end was shaking with rage.
Victor felt a chill run down his spine. "W-What exactly happened?"
Seeing Victor's reaction, Kiera couldn't help feeling a surge of confusion and suspicion.
'Grandpa's a retired top general—who on earth could've called him to make him look so rattled?' Kiera wondered, feeling increasingly uneasy.
Keaton had barely taken two steps before pausing.
Watching Victor taking the call, he made up his mind to stick around and enjoy the spectacle.
"You dare ask what happened? Your granddaughter's out of control—she secretly pulled troops from military division and ordered them to besiege Dr. Bennett!"
"What?" Victor sprang up from his seat, his hand shaking uncontrollably as he held the phone.
'Dr. Bennett? Kaia?' Victor's mind was spinning.
Fear surged within him.
Now he got it—no wonder Kaia's name had sounded familiar. Three years ago, before he'd retired, he'd once had the honor of guarding Kaia himself on a special assignment.
'Wait a second—could it really be...?' Victor's thoughts were out of control.
Right away, Victor's eyes darted to Keaton. The look on Keaton's face—so calm and confident—told Victor everything. He knew now, he'd guessed right all along.
The next moment, he suddenly glared at Kiera, his eyes blazing with fury, making Kiera's hair stand on end.
"Kiera, you've got some nerve! How dare you lie to me!" Victor's voice thundered.
"No, that's not true, Grandpa! I really didn't do it!" Kiera protested, her voice unsteady.
"Don't even try to deny it! Who gave you the go-ahead to mobilize the military forces? Tell me—the name, now!"
With each accusation getting harsher, Kiera realized she couldn't cover it up any longer. Helpless, she turned her gaze toward Zane.
Zane realized there was no way out of this and stepped forward, his voice taut with guilt. "Dad, don't blame Kiera. It wasn't her fault, it was—"
"So it was you, wasn't it? You worthless idiot!" Victor exploded, his fists trembling with rage. "How did I end up with a son like you? Kiera's just a kid—she doesn't know any better. But you? You're past fifty, and you still get swept up in some reckless stunt with her? Unbelievable!"
"This whole mess is on me—I let Kiera run wild, and I'm willing to face whatever consequences," Zane said, voice thick with shame.
"Consequences? You think this is just about sneaking around with military men? Do you even realize who Kiera was up against? I ought to kick you halfway to the grave!" Victor exploded.
He snapped and slammed his foot into Victor, knocking him sprawling across the floor.
Kaia was the foremost scientific genius of the country and the military's highest priority to protect. But Victor, a retired top general, couldn't keep his own son and granddaughter from teaming up against her.
He even wanted to atone with his life.
Kiera was utterly panicked—she'd never seen her grandfather so furious at home before, not even close.
She heard Zane's ribs snap with a loud, chilling crack that shook her to the core.
No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn't figure out why her grandfather was so out of control. She also wondered who exactly Kaia was.
'Kaia is just Kaia, isn't she? Nothing but a nobody from the countryside. How could she possibly matter so much?' Kiera thought, completely at a loss.
