Gideon dashed over and seized Tobias's wrist with a firm grip.
"Let her go," Gideon demanded.
Tobias was already annoyed, and now he was completely furious.
"You're asking for death!" Tobias snarled.
"My job is to protect her. So let go," Gideon replied, staring Tobias down without backing off.
The atmosphere was so tense, it felt like things could blow up at any second.
Kaia could tell if she didn't step in, these two were about to get into a fight.
"Seriously, you're not kids anymore—enough," Kaia said, trying to break it up.
"He lets go first," Gideon said, refusing to back down.
Tobias's face grew even darker, and the air around them seemed to drop in temperature with every passing second.
Kaia rubbed her temples, then turned to Tobias. "Just let go."
"Why am I the one letting go first, and not him? Kaia, I've known you longer. Don't you think this is unfair to me? I've never brought a woman home, and I never will."
"But you? You bring this pretty boy home and openly try to steal my spot as the main guy. Russell was right—you've always turned me down because you don't like guys like me. You prefer little puppy boys like him," Tobias snapped.
"You're the puppy boy!" Gideon shot back, bristling with anger.
Kaia paused, then added, "Honestly, he's more like a little wolfdog."
"So you like little wolf dogs, huh?" Tobias narrowed his eyes, danger practically overflowing.
Kaia was speechless.
"Talking to you just doesn't make any sense." she grumbled.
"Oh, so talking with your little wolfdog actually makes more sense now?" Tobias snapped right back.
Kaia was at a loss for words. She took a deep breath to calm herself, then said, "Because of what happened with Kiera last time, Mr. Yates sent someone from the military to protect me for a while as an apology."
"Seriously?" Tobias shot back, clearly skeptical.
"If you don't believe me, I'll call him right now and ask," Kaia said, her tone full of confidence.
She was sure that with Victor's smarts, he'd give her the answer she wanted.
Looking into Kaia's clear, innocent eyes, Tobias couldn't help but believe her.
"Even if he's supposed to protect you, does he have to be glued to your side 24/7? The Moreno family's got plenty of top-notch bodyguards—I could just pick the best for you. If that's not good enough, I'll send Devin to stick with you," Tobias shot back.
"If I ever need extra protection, I'll let you know. Seriously, you know I hate being followed around. As for Gideon... it's honestly out of my hands. Mr. Yates said if I refused his apology, he'd just take matters into his own hands and follow me himself."
"What do you want me to do—let a retired general trail me everywhere I go? People would think I'm some kind of high-ranking VIP or something," Kaia said, sounding half exasperated, half amused.
Kaia's words were flawless, leaving Tobias with nothing more to say.
"Alright, I'll let him protect you for now, but you two are still a guy and a girl, so keep things appropriate. Don't tell me he's gonna camp outside your room all night," Tobias grumbled.
"No way!" Gideon jumped in.
Tobias shot him a glare, thinking, 'Good, at least the kid knows his place.'
But Gideon had more to say. "Come on, as her personal bodyguard, you think I'd just stand outside her door? Of course I'd be right by her bedside, keeping watch."
It was like a blizzard hit—the atmosphere in the villa went ice-cold and dangerous in a heartbeat.
"Looks like you really have a death wish." Tobias growled.
Gideon stuck his chin out, looking totally fearless. "Death? Death's nothing special—I've stared it in the face more times than I can count and always came out the other side."
"So there's seriously nothing that scares you?" Tobias challenged, raising an eyebrow.
