"I've been a street kid since I can remember—no parents, no family, no friends. I only had to fend for myself; as long as I was fed, nothing else mattered. If I gotta say I'm scared of something, it's screwing up my mission and getting roasted back at base," Gideon shot back.
Tobias had never run into someone this stubborn before. But his gut told him this guy wasn't after his girl—Gideon was just in hardcore bodyguard mode.
If it weren't for that, this reckless kid wouldn't still be standing here with his neck intact.
"I'm telling you guys, enough," Kaia finally cut in, feeling her nerves frazzled.
Kaia felt her headache pounding harder with every word—at this rate, she was going to explode. Suddenly, it hit her why Joel had insisted on choosing Gideon for the job.
It wasn't just Gideon's skills that mattered; it was that his stubborn, headstrong attitude was practically a carbon copy of Joel himself.
"Gideon, seriously—when I'm sleeping, you don't need to be hanging around my room or guarding my door. Either stay next door or right across the hall, okay?" Kaia insisted, wanting some personal space.
"No way. What if there's an emergency and I can't get to you fast enough? Or do you just not trust me?" Gideon shot back, sounding defensive.
Right then, Gideon held up two fingers in a solemn oath.
"I swear I'd never have any inappropriate thoughts about you. If I ever do, may lightning strike me where I stand and let me die a horrible death," he said, dead serious.
"That curse isn't even that bad," Tobias broke in. "You say you're not afraid of dying, so what's a lightning strike or a messy end supposed to do for you?"
"Then what do you want me to swear on?" Gideon challenged right back.
Tobias paused, deliberately letting his gaze drop to Gideon's crotch.
"If you really want to go hardcore, make it the classic—you swear you'll never have kids. That's the real deal," Tobias said, dripping with sarcasm.
Gideon went totally blank, struck speechless.
"You claim to be righteous, but it's all fake." Tobias shot back with a snort.
Kaia pressed her hand to her forehead, then pinched her brow. When she looked at Gideon again, her face was all business.
"Gideon," she called, voice calm but commanding.
"Here!" Gideon straightened up, looking all serious and tough.
"Look, I'm not the type who likes people tailing me. You've probably heard that from him before you even showed up. I only agreed to let you stick around because of him—and I didn't want to make things awkward for you."
"So since I'm already thinking about your side, I hope you can think about mine too. Give me enough space and freedom, and don't restrict me too much." Kaia said firmly but with a touch of understanding.
Kaia knew exactly how to handle him—sweet talk one minute, firm as steel the next. Gideon wasn't some battle-hardened veteran like Joel; he didn't stand it and immediately surrendered.
"Alright, I'll stay next door. But promise me—if anything happens, you'll let me know right away," Gideon said, his tone serious.
"You can—" Kaia started, but Tobias cut her off before she could finish.
"Don't worry, I'll be right by her pillow tonight. Nothing's gonna happen."
Kaia was speechless.
"Who said I agreed to that?"
"Me," Tobias tossed back, zero hesitation.
After dinner, Kaia didn't waste a second—she slammed her door shut, double-checked the lock, and headed straight for a hot shower.
She was mid-shampoo when she caught the sound of footsteps in her room—like someone had just come in.
'No way... I locked that door, didn't I?' she thought, mind racing.
Puzzled and a little freaked out, she grabbed a towel, wrapped it around herself, and shoved open the bathroom door—only to completely blank out in disbelief.
Tobias was sprawled across her bed, shirt half-off, looking totally relaxed. The second he saw her, he didn't skip a beat—instead, he just leaned back deeper and crooked his finger at her, eyes full of wicked intent.
