"Hey, what's up? Something bothering you?" Kaia asked, catching the weird vibe. But right after she said that, Zion looked even more freaked out—like he wanted to blurt something but the words were stuck in his throat.
"Come on, out with it already. There's no one else here but us," Kaia insisted.
Zion hesitated before finally speaking up, "Dr. Bennett, you'd better take someone with you when you head out later. It's safer that way—just in case someone tries to attack you."
"Hmm? What do you mean?" Kaia narrowed her eyes, suspicion flickering within. 'Could it be the people plotting against me are finally making their move?'
Zion pulled out his phone. "See for yourself."
Kaia couldn't shake the feeling that she'd seen this before. Penny had acted just like this the last time Kiera sicced her fans on her.
'Is Kiera still not giving up? Is she pulling her same old tricks again?' Kaia thought.
With that suspicion nagging at her, Kaia opened up Twitter on her phone.
Sure enough.
Just ten minutes ago, Kiera—who had disappeared for nearly a week—suddenly posted on Twitter.
She posted a selfie with the caption: [Don't worry, everyone. I'm fine, just a bit tired. Took a few days off to rest.]
In the photo, Kiera was clearly trying to hide—mask on, bucket hat pulled low—but no amount of cover-up could disguise the dark bruises on her face.
The comments section instantly blew up.
[My baby, what happened to you? Why is your face so swollen? No wonder you've been missing from all your schedules these past few days.]
[Seriously, is this even a question? It's obviously that shameless homewrecker who's been throwing herself at Gavyn. She must've done this!]
[Has the world gone crazy? Since when do homewreckers get to act so tough?]
[Everyone, let's all go after her! Strength in numbers!]
*****
Then Kiera posted another update on Twitter.
[Just to set the record straight: Kaia had nothing to do with this. I got these bruises from a filming accident, totally my fault.]
[Come on, Kiera, quit defending that homewrecker! You've been shooting a fluffy romance show—not a stunt in sight. There's no way you'd get hurt unless someone did it on purpose. Even if you did get hurt, no production team would let you injure your face, especially not that severely!]
[For sure, Kiera's just saying all that because that homewrecker must've threatened her.]
[But seriously, isn't that homewrecker just some country bumpkin? How could she even get close to threatening Kiera?]
[You're only hearing half the story. There was a ton of gossip flying around recently—word is, that Kaia is actually being kept by some rich and powerful old guy.]
[Ugh! Disgusting.]
Kaia didn't bother reading any further.
Seeing Kaia stay silent, Zion's brows knitted together in worry.
"Dr. Bennett, are you alright?" he asked, concern clear in his voice.
Kaia waved her hand casually. "She's smart—this tactic is much better than the last one. But she'd better hope she doesn't go too far; otherwise… I won't show the Yates family any respect. Not for a second."
Thinking back, when Kaia was abroad for a seminar, if the Yates brothers hadn't literally risked their lives for her, she might not have made it out alive.
And that's the only reason she'd let Kiera off the hook so far.
If it had been anyone else, she wouldn't have let it slide for a second.
"What did you mean just now, Dr. Bennett?" Zion asked, still looking puzzled.
"Nothing. Let's get back to work," Kaia replied.
After sending Zion away, Kaia was just settling back into her work when Gideon burst in, voice edged with anger.
"Dr. Bennett, let me take care of this," Gideon said flatly.
Kaia looked him over, clearly entertained. "What's your plan? You're not actually gonna rough her up, are you?"
