"How could I possibly do something that stupid?"
Kaia's curiosity was instantly piqued at Gideon's reply.
"So, what's your plan?" she asked.
Gideon flashed a sly grin. "When I was doing a routine mission in the rainforest, I stumbled upon this herb that can wipe out every last strand of hair. Just a few drops of its juice in her food—quiet and sneaky, she wouldn't even notice—and in no time, she'd be as bald as a shiny egg. Not a single hair left, not a trace, and it won't grow back for years."
His words painted such a clear picture that Kaia could totally imagine Kiera bald—with not even eyebrows left.
Just thinking about it made Kaia want to laugh.
"What kind of herb is it?" Kaia asked.
"It doesn't grow around here, only in the rainforest. I don't even know what it's called, but I snapped a pic," Gideon replied.
He pulled out his phone and handed it to Kaia, showing her the picture.
Kaia studied the photo a bit longer and said, "I haven't seen this plant before. I'll have someone track some down for me when I get the chance."
"Hold on, you're not really thinking of doing it yourself, are you? Seriously, someone with your status shouldn't get their hands dirty for something this petty. Why waste all that firepower? Just leave it to me," Gideon said, still thinking Kaia planned on sneaking the juice into Kiera's meal herself.
Kaia let out a short laugh, then teased, "What about you? Do you really need all that fuss just to deal with someone like Kiera?"
"Then what's the plant for?" Gideon asked, puzzled, still scratching his head.
"I've got my reasons. Maybe one day you'll get to find out," Kaia replied mysteriously.
All those hair removal products out there barely worked. If this plant did what Gideon claimed—no regrowth for years—she could totally use it for some fun research and maybe whip up her own natural, long-lasting hair remover. That'd be a neat little discovery.
She was still daydreaming about it when her phone suddenly rang, snapping her out of her thoughts.
She checked her screen—it was a video call from Joel.
"Kiera causing trouble again? Want me to take care of it?" Joel jumped right in.
"Her grandpa already knows who I am. If they could actually rein Kiera in, don't you think they would've done it by now? This time, she really pulled a fast one. She just showed up to clear things up, all masked and hat-wearing. Her three grandpas must've talked to her, but she probably just played the victim and pinned everything on her fans," Kaia analyzed.
"So we're just letting it go? You might be able to brush it off, but I can't. Too bad I can't get there right now, or I'd totally snatch her up and give her a good beating," Joel said, sounding frustrated.
Kaia rubbed her temples, exasperated. "Seriously, you sound just like Gideon. This whole thing doesn't really bother me that much. Just let me handle it myself."
With that, Kaia quickly changed the subject. "So, when are you coming back?"
"Actually, that's just what I was about to mention. My grandparents are celebrating their seventieth birthdays soon, and since I'm the only grandson, my dad insisted I take the chance to stay longer and help make their birthday celebration really special," Joel said.
"That's awesome! As the eldest grandson, it's up to you to make it a great event—and absolutely nail it," Kaia grinned, half teasing.
"But..." Joel frowned, clearly anxious. "Kiera's drama isn't urgent, but I'm seriously worried about those lurking in the shadows, scheming against you. They might pop up at any moment."
