Gideon puffed out his chest and said, "Joel, relax. With me here, nothing's going to happen—I've sworn on it! As long as I'm around, Dr. Bennett won't lose even a single hair. Just enjoy your time off—even if you take a year or two, it's all good!"
"Oh, so you want me to take a year or two off—trying to steal my position, huh?" Joel replied, half joking and half annoyed.
Gideon gave a cheeky grin, not even trying to hide it. "Mr. Graham, let's be real—aren't you getting a bit old? Time to retire, find yourself a nice girl, and keep the family name going. As for guarding Dr. Bennett, just leave that job to me!"
"You little brat! Next time I see you, you're getting a good thrashing!" Joel shot back.
Kaia burst out laughing at their back-and-forth. Looking at Joel on the screen, she teased, "Honestly, Gideon's totally right! You're not exactly a boy anymore, and since you're the last hope of the Graham family tree, maybe you really should start thinking about passing on the family name."
Joel just sat there, speechless.
They joked around a little before finally wrapping up the call.
"Come on, let's hit the mall," Kaia said, shooting a look at Gideon.
Gideon fussed, "Are you sure you need to buy something? Just tell me—I'll go and grab it for you. There are so many people at the mall, who knows who's hiding in the crowd? What if someone shady is waiting to pull something?"
Kaia arched a brow, grinning to herself.
"Relax, you're with me, right? What's there to fear—or are you secretly doubting your own skills?" Kaia teased him.
"No way, I'm totally confident," Gideon protested. "But still, better safe than sorry. Just don't go wandering someplace that dangerous."
"Alright, fine," Kaia said, making it look like she was willing to compromise.
Gideon felt both relieved and quietly pleased. 'Maybe Joel was exaggerating after all,' he thought.
Before coming here, Joel had told him Kaia really had a mind of her own and never backed down—once she made a decision, nobody could change it.
But seeing how cooperative she was now, Gideon guessed that Joel must have been teasing him.
Just as he was thinking that, Kaia suddenly piped up, "I need to pick up some lingerie—bras, to be exact. I'll send you my size."
Gideon's jaw dropped so wide.
"What's wrong? Why's your face so red? Are you okay?" Kaia asked, struggling to keep a straight face.
With Kaia staring straight at him and the thought of shopping for her bras swirling in his head, Gideon's blush spread all the way down his neck.
"Uh, well... I... I think I'd better just come with you," Gideon stammered, completely flustered.
Kaia bit back a laugh and walked ahead like nothing had happened.
Watching her walk away, Gideon suddenly realized Joel hadn't been kidding at all. Kaia really was something else—she'd wrapped him around her finger with just a few words, no effort at all.
Now it all made sense—when Kaia said Kiera was just a clown, she meant every word. To her, Kiera was barely a blip on the radar—utterly insignificant. If Kiera kept pushing her luck, Kaia could crush her in an instant and make sure she never recovered.
Once they got to the mall, Gideon followed Kaia right into a jewelry store.
"Wait, Dr. Bennett, weren't we supposed to go to the lingerie shop?" Gideon asked, still baffled.
Kaia chuckled, "I was just teasing you—you actually believed me."
Gideon could only stare, speechless.
"Okay, seriously—Joel's grandparents have their birthdays coming up, and I want to surprise them with a quiet visit. That's why I'm here to pick out a gift for them," Kaia said, fully decided on her plan.
