Joel had worked so hard for her for so long. Doing this for him was the least she could do.
"No way! That's way too dangerous!" Gideon blurted out, not even pausing to think.
Kaia reached out and gave Gideon a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "Don't worry. With you here, I know we'll be safe."
Gideon opened his mouth, thinking to himself, 'She's using that line again.'
"This pearl necklace looks great, and this one's pretty nice too. Joel's grandma might really love them," Kaia said as she stepped into the shop, her eyes scanning the displays with focus as she began carefully picking out a gift.
Finally, she picked out a stunning strand of pearls—each bead was perfectly round, gleaming with an exceptional shine and absolutely flawless. Kaia's lips curled into a satisfied smile.
After making her choice, Kaia turned to the salesperson. "I'll take this necklace. Please wrap it up for me."
The salesperson rolled her eyes, each word sharper and nastier than the last.
"Did you see the price? It's a hundred thousand dollars. Can you even afford this?" she sniped.
Kaia frowned. This salesperson had treated her with a hateful glare ever since she walked in, like she was some kind of debtor.
But now, Kaia felt there was obviously something else at play, not just snobbery.
"Do you even know me? How do you know whether I can afford it? And what gives you the right to look at me like I'm trash? Is it your job to mock customers, or are you always this rude?" Kaia shot back.
"Hah! So it's me who has poor manners? Or is it you? I don't care whether you can afford it or not—I just know all the money in your hand came from your shamelessness," the salesperson snapped, hands on her hips, glaring at Kaia with pure disgust.
"You're just asking for a beating!" Gideon snapped, his fists clenched.
But before he could make a move, Kaia reached out and stopped him.
"I'd really like to know—what makes you think you can say that to me?" Kaia asked, her voice calm but challenging.
Just then, a voice rang out from the doorway.
"Wow, you really have the guts to ask that? Everyone knows you got all your cash by threatening Gavyn. You're the side piece who wrecked things between Gavyn and Kiera, and now the whole world hates you. Still got the nerve to come out shopping like nothing happened? Honestly, I kind of admire your shamelessness," the girl spat.
Kaia turned to look. The girl wasn't much to look at, but the expensive designer bag over her shoulder was eye-catching, and the clothes she had on were from her own label, Kaye Bella.
"Who are you?" Kaia asked.
The girl gave Kaia a look of utter contempt, her nose in the air.
"I'm a Swanson heiress," the girl declared, her chin lifted and arrogance practically rolling off her.
Kaia blinked and asked, "Swanson? Which Swanson family are you talking about?"
"Wow, clueless much? You really don't know the Swansons, Morganburg's most elite? Figures, since all you do is chase after other people's boyfriends," the girl snorted, her voice thick with disdain.
"Exactly" the salesperson added, snorting in agreement.
At that point, Kaia finally pieced it together—so that's why the salesperson had given her attitude from the start.
If Kaia had to guess, this salesperson was probably either a hardcore Gavyn fangirl or obsessed with Kiera.
"As far as I know, the Swanson family only has one actual heir—Abdullah. They just found their lost son not long ago. Since when did a Swanson heiress pop up out of nowhere?" Kaia shot back.
Emily's jaw dropped as she stared at Kaia, stunned. 'How the heck does she even know about those family secrets?
Did Gavyn spill the beans to her?'
That's gotta be it.'
"I'm not part of the direct line," Emily said, suddenly sounding a bit defensive.
"Oh," Kaia replied with a dismissive nod. "So you're just from some side branch, huh."
"Who do you think you are, looking down on everyone like that? I'm telling you, this pearl necklace isn't for sale to you. Now get out and go to another store!" Emily deliberately raised her voice, making sure everyone around could hear and humiliate Kaia.
