It was obvious he was coming over to greet her.
Just then, an uninvited guest arrived.
"Collin, I hope you don't mind me showing up without an invitation!" the man said.
He was dressed in a long dark traditional vest and was carrying a painting in his hands.
"Who is that guy? He looks kind of familiar," Kaia muttered. Before she could think any further, a voice piped up beside her.
"He's my grandpa's sworn enemy, Jonathan Zaslow. Trust me, he's definitely up to no good," Samantha replied.
Kaia glanced at Samantha. "Where did you suddenly come from?"
"Kaia! I was waiting for you by the door forever! How'd you get in without telling me? I called you and you totally ignored me," Samantha complained, pouting.
Samantha wrapped herself around Kaia's arm, swaying back and forth like a lost puppy.
"You called me?" Kaia pulled out her phone and checked. It wasn't off, and she didn't have any missed calls.
"Did your phone run out of minutes?" Samantha asked.
"Maybe," Kaia said.
"I'll just put some money on your phone," Samantha replied without missing a beat.
"No—" Kaia barely managed to get the word out before her phone chimed with the new balance notification.
"Okay, I've just topped up your phone with 300 thousand dollars. No way you'll ever get cut off ever again—you're basically set for life," Samantha said with a smirk.
Kaia was speechless.
"Wait, 300 thousand dollars? Are you for real?" Sean stammered, eyes practically popping out.
"That's not even that much. My grandpa's paintings sell for several million dollars apiece, so what's so shocking about this?" Samantha shrugged, then looked at Kaia. "Hey Kaia, do you actually know this guy?"
"Yeah, he was in the class next to mine back in high school," Kaia replied.
"Oh," Samantha shrugged, clearly not interested at all.
Sean and Kent were stunned.
This girl was actually Collin's granddaughter.
They now realized that Kaia didn't even need them —she could've just walked in with Samantha.
Sean couldn't help but lean in and whisper to Kaia.
"Is she really Mr. Crawford's granddaughter?"
"Exactly," Kaia replied.
Sean and Kent exchanged another look, both of them completely stunned.
"So how did you even meet her?"
"One morning, I saw Collin practicing boxing, but his moves were all wrong, so I gave him a couple of pointers. That's how we met," Kaia said, as if it was nothing special.
Sean and Kent both gasped. According to Kaia's words, it meant that she and Collin also knew each other.
"I think she's just bluffing," Kent muttered under his breath.
"How can you tell?" Sean asked.
"Think about it—Collin's a legend. There's no chance a nobody like Kaia would actually know him. But his granddaughter? Maybe. Look at me—I'm just some farm boy, you're the privileged kid, and we're still pals," Kent reasoned.
"Yeah, she's probably just trying to act cool and pretending she knows Collin to impress people."
Collin kept a stern face. If it weren't for his status, he would've already had Jonathan thrown out. "What are you doing here?"
"Collin, it's your art show today. I've got a painting here I'd like you to take a look at," Jonathan said, trying to sound all friendly.
Collin let out a cold snort. "You bring someone else's painting to my show? Are you trying to stir things up?"
"Come on, Collin, don't get upset. Why would I ever want to cause trouble at your big event?" Jonathan replied, playing innocent.
But inside, everyone could see right through him—causing trouble was exactly what he came here to do.
"Oh, come on. Don't tell me you painted this thing yourself," Collin snapped, his voice tinged with obvious sarcasm.
Jonathan gave a sly laugh. "Please, as if I'd bother. Just look and you'll know."
He waved a hand, and his assistant hurried to unroll the painting for everyone to see.
