Gavyn took it all in and couldn't deny that his father had a point in choosing Tobias as the family head. In the entire family, aside from his father, only this nephew of his possessed such an intimidating presence.
Not to mention those guys making fun of Kaia shrank back hard, but even Gavyn, as Tobias's uncle, felt his own hair stand on end.
Kaia ignored all the laughter; her face was calm as she looked at Kiera. "Go ahead, laugh all you want. Just wait—soon enough, you'll be the one crying," she said.
"Fine, I'll take the bet. If I lose, I'll spell my name backward!" Kiera shot back, unable to stand Kaia's cocky attitude. 'Just wait, Kaia. You'll be the one who's totally humiliated soon enough,' she thought.
"Alright, but it's not enough," Kaia replied coolly.
"What else do you want to add to the bet?" Kiera retorted.
Kaia paused for a moment, then said, "Besides spelling your name backward, from now on, whenever you see me, you have to steer clear—don't even come close."
"Steer clear? Nah, that's way too lame. Let's raise the stakes—whoever loses has to be the winner's sidekick, do whatever they're told, no questions asked. How about that?
"Now that's a real bet, way more fun! You got the guts for it, or you wanna chicken out and admit right here you'll never try to flirt with Gavyn again?" Kiera suggested.
'What an idiot!' Kaia thought, speechless. 'I've explained a million times I've got nothing going on with Gavyn, but Kiera actually still thinks I'm into him.'
"Deal," Kaia replied coldly.
Kiera handed the gun to Kaia and said, "Don't waste everyone's time. Stalling won't make your skills—"
Before she could finish her sentence, Kaia pulled the trigger and cut her off. "Bang!" Three-ring hits.
"So much for a sharpshooter! Only hit three rings? That's pathetic! I could nail that with my eyes closed!" someone commented.
"Exactly! I thought Kaia must've been hiding some serious skills to challenge Kiera, but it turns out she's just blindly overconfident," another person said.
"Why are you still up there? It's just so embarrassing! Hurry up and get off the stage with your tail tucked in. Trust us, we won't just snicker—we'll be laughing our heads off!"
"Wow, you're ruthless, but honestly, you nailed it! Kaia, get down!"
Grant and Maxime looked totally flustered and said, "Victor, maybe we should step in and help Dr. Bennett out. We can't let these kids keep running their mouths at her.
"Dr. Bennett's always neck-deep in her research—where would she have the time to practice shooting? These little punks actually have the nerve to laugh at her. If they knew her true identity, let's see if they'd still have the guts to joke around!"
Victor's face turned serious as he stroked his beard, watching Kaia's unfazed expression. "Let's not jump the gun. Let's watch for a bit longer," he said.
"But Victor—"
"Enough. Just keep watching. If things really get messy, worst case, I'll slip and tell Kiera who Dr. Bennett really is. She needs to realize what she's messing with before she goes too far," Victor said. He had already prepared for this.
Although Kaia's identity was sensitive and shouldn't be publicized, if things continued to develop like this, he worried that Kiera might end up making a terrible mistake.
"No! I'm going over to get Kaia out of this! This whole mess started because of me—I can't just stand here and watch her get humiliated!" Gavyn was about to rush over, but Tobias grabbed his arm, stopping him.
"Just wait a little bit longer," Tobias said.
"Wait? For how long?" Gavyn shot back.
Tobias kept his eyes fixed on Kaia, his gaze unreadable. Seeing the unwavering determination in her eyes, he was sure she wouldn't lose to Kiera. As for that first shot, he figured it was just a slip—no big deal.
Just as that thought crossed his mind, Kaia slowly closed her eyes—then suddenly opened them, a sharp gleam flashing in their depths.
