'Suck it up, just suck it up,' Kiera told herself, jaw aching from how hard she clenched it.
"Alright, everyone had fun. It's about time for dinner," Victor said, signaling the kitchen to bring out the food.
Tobias gently took Kaia's hand and grinned. "Come on, let's go and eat together."
"I'm actually starving," Kaia said as she walked hand-in-hand with Tobias toward the dining table.
Hazel Bean, Kiera's agent, walked over and watched Kaia and Tobias heading off side by side to dinner. She couldn't help but say, "Kiera, I think you've got it all wrong. Seriously, Kaia and Tobias look exactly like a couple."
"Come on, you've been doing showbiz for ages and still can't tell when someone's putting on a show?" Kiera snarked.
"Putting on a show? I don't see it. Have you even noticed how Mr. Moreno looks at Kaia? It's like she's his whole damn universe. He's gentle in a way you rarely see," Hazel insisted.
"You're not seeing things straight. What I saw was Gavyn hanging off Tobias's shoulder, whispering nonstop. I bet he was begging his dear nephew to help him out," Kiera said confidently.
Kiera continued her analysis, certain in her tone as she added, "I've seen Tobias try to get close to Kaia plenty of times. She always acts so awkward, practically recoiling. If they were together, she wouldn't react like that."
"I guess I never paid much attention before," Hazel admitted. "If Kaia always pushes Mr. Moreno away like you say, you've probably nailed it. They can't be together."
As dinner kicked off, Tobias was completely attentive to Kaia. Dishing out food for her, peeling her shrimp, picking out fish bones, and promptly refilling her wine whenever her glass ran dry.
Across from them on the dining table, Kiera leaned and whispered to Hazel, "You see that? Kaia's giving Tobias major side-eye, totally signaling him to chill out—like, 'Enough, don't make a big deal out of it.' After all, she's Gavyn's girlfriend and might be your future sister-in-law."
"Well... If you say so," Hazel replied, though something definitely felt off. It seemed that things were not as Kiera analyzed.
"You don't believe me, do you? Just watch. They'll drop the act soon enough," Kiera insisted.
"And how would you know?" Hazel asked.
"Because I know Tobias. He's never shown any real interest in women. Gavyn must've begged and pleaded, probably even threatened, to get Tobias to agree to this," Kiera added with a smug look.
While Kiera and Hazel were whispering, Kaia stealthily slipped her hand under the table and pinched Tobias's thigh hard. She flashed him a look that clearly said, 'Cut it out! You're piling my plate too high. How am I supposed to eat all this? If you want to show off, keep it reasonable, at least.'
Tobias felt the sting shoot through his leg, but he was secretly loving every moment of it. He met Kaia's eyes with a soft grin, silently thinking, 'Go on, pinch me some more. Sometimes, tough love is just another way of showing care.'
'Oh? Is that so?' Kaia thought, and kept pinching harder.
The pain almost had Tobias's jaw clenched, and the veins at his temples standing out.
Kiera and Hazel caught the whole exchange.
"Check out Tobias. The veins on his forehead are about to jump out. He's losing his cool," Kiera murmured.
"Yeah, looks like you're right," Hazel agreed.
Kaia realized Tobias wasn't budging, so she tried pulling her hand away. But Tobias was faster. He snatched her hand, put it right back on his thigh, and started gently massaging the exact spot she'd pinched, refusing to let go.
"What are you doing?" asked Kaia, gritting her teeth. She felt her face heating up, blush creeping up her cheeks.
Tobias leaned in, lips almost brushing her ear as he whispered, "You gave me a pinch and thought you could just bolt? Nope. Whoever pinches me has to make it better. Come on, give it a soothing rub."
