The more Kaia rubbed Tobias's thigh, the more outrageous she got.
With Kaia's hand locked in his, Tobias led her hand slowly upward.
'Don't take it too far!' Kaia burst out inwardly, glaring daggers at Tobias.
"See? They're done pretending. Look at Kaia. Her glare practically screams she wants to tear Tobias apart. And Tobias is grinning, but his smile is all sharp edges. He looks like he's ready to devour her back," Kiera broke it down, analyzing.
"Alright, you got me! You called it," Hazel admitted, realizing she'd misjudged the whole thing. "Kiera, you really have an eye for these."
"It's not just about being smart. I know Gavyn. He has never cared about women, not once. There's no chance he's actually into Kaia," Kiera added.
Kaia yanked her hand back, and Tobias let go just enough to let her escape. If he hadn't, she never would've managed to break free from his grip.
"You've got some ketchup on your lip," Tobias said, his eyes fixed on her lips.
Kaia was about to wipe it off when, out of nowhere, Tobias's handsome face suddenly filled her vision. His lips moved in, gently brushing against the corner of her mouth, wiping away the ketchup.
Kaia's heart slammed wildly in her chest, her eyes practically bugging out.
Her face flushed in a heartbeat, almost like it might burst into flames.
Her blood surged and roared, every nerve on fire.
In contrast to the tempestuous waves raging within Kaia's heart, the surroundings were awfully quiet. Everybody froze mid-motion: forks dangling, drinks paused halfway, not a soul dared to move, all eyes glued to Kaia and Tobias.
After a few ragged breaths, Kaia shoved Tobias away and shot to her feet.
"Kaia, I didn't mean to..." Tobias started.
However, Kaia slapped him hard across the face before he could finish his words.
The smack echoed through the room, sharp and unmistakable.
"Tobias Moreno! You've gone too far!" Kaia snapped, her voice shaking with fury.
With anger still burning in her voice, Kaia whipped around and stormed off.
Watching Kaia's retreating figure, Tobias slowly touched his cheek where her slap landed, a satisfied, almost smug grin spreading across his face.
Tobias thought, 'As people say, sometimes, tough love is just another way of showing care. Sure, it stings like hell, but the pain felt almost sweet, like love with a bite. I couldn't help but enjoy every moment of it.'
Upon thinking of that, Tobias sprang to his feet and chased after her.
Hazel turned her head stiffly toward Kiera and said, "Kiera, do you still think they're putting on a show?"
Kiera opened her mouth and closed it again. Then she sneaked a look at Gavyn. Unexpectedly, Gavyn was watching the spot where Kaia and Tobias had disappeared, looking mighty satisfied with himself, like he'd seen exactly what he wanted.
'So… I was just over here acting like a smartass for nothing?' Kiera groaned inwardly, feeling more than a little embarrassed.
She didn't need to ask anyone. That much was painfully obvious now.
Just like she'd told Hazel earlier, Kiera knew Tobias better than anyone. Even if Gavyn begged him to play pretend, Tobias would never go that far, no way in hell.Hazel Bean
Moreover, with the way Tobias looked at Kaia and his grin after getting slapped, it seemed like he didn't care if the whole place was gawking at them. If that was all an act, he'd walk away with the Best Actor Award, no doubt about it.
Kaia stormed out of the Yates family residence, fuming. She hadn't gotten far before Tobias caught up to her.
"Kaia!" Tobias called, reaching out to grab her hand from behind.
"Let go of me!" Kaia snapped, tugging her hand to break free.
"Kaia, let me explain, please. Don't be mad. I swear, I only did this because of Gavyn," Tobias pleaded, desperation showing in his voice.
"For Gavyn? Seriously? Sounds to me like you did it for yourself," Kaia shot back with a scoff, rolling her eyes at him.
Tobias pressed Kaia's palm right over his heart, making sure she could feel every wild beat.
