Kaia stared at the tightly shut door, Tobias's pitiful face still replaying over and over in her mind.
She snorted with laughter, unable to hold it back.
'Not gonna lie. He's actually pretty adorable when he's like that,' thought Kaia.
Just then, a loud crack of thunder split the sky.
It was about to pour.
Kaia walked over to the window to close it. As she reached it, she noticed Gideon standing directly beneath the window, perfectly straight.
"What are you doing here?" she called out.
"I'm here to keep you safe," Gideon answered.
"You can stay next door. There's no need to be posted up right under my window. And with the storm coming, you should head back to your room," Kaia insisted.
"I can't do that. You have no idea. I've found footprints under your window these past few days," Gideon said, his face full of remorse. "That's my mistake."
Upon hearing that, Kaia couldn't help but glance at the door, her mind immediately jumping to Tobias.
'Tobias has been climbing around my window for days now,' Kaia thought, barely holding back an eye-roll.
"Trust me, it's not your fault. If anyone's to blame, it's because someone has absolutely no shame," Kaia said.
Just as Kaia was talking, the rain came pouring down all of a sudden, hard and fierce.
"Seriously, get back inside before you end up catching a cold!" Kaia shouted, a note of worry in her voice.
"Hey, relax. I used to get drenched all the time and not once did I get sick," Gideon replied, shrugging like it was no big deal.
'Gideon is so damn stubborn,' Kaia thought, rolling her eyes in exasperation. 'Whatever, let him do as he likes. Once the rain starts pouring, he'll be out of here soon enough.'
Somewhere in the middle of the night, Kaia was jolted awake by a thunderclap. The sound of rain pounding against the window told her it was coming down even harder now.
'Wait, is Gideon, the fool, still hanging out down there?' Kaia thought, her worry starting to build.
Feeling anxious, Kaia got out of bed and went to the window. She pulled it open. Instantly, her eyes went wide. There Gideon was. Gideon was soaked to the bone and totally passed out from the rain.
She brought Gideon back to her room. Gideon spent the whole night burning up with a high fever, the chills coming and going nonstop until the next morning.
Kaia had planned to take Gideon along on her trip to Joel's hometown today, but it turned out she'd be heading out solo.
Joel's hometown was far. Kaia caught an early flight at 6 a.m., then kept transferring between vehicles. Finally, she rolled into the town where Joel grew up sometime around three or four in the afternoon.
Getting off the last bus, Kaia frowned with worry.
'Shoot, I completely blanked on which neighborhood Joel actually lives in,' Kaia thought, feeling a bit embarrassed and anxious.
Then, a BMW drove over from down the road.
Inside sat a young man and a woman.
"Come on! Step on it! The birthday party of Joel's grandpa is about to start. We'll lose our seats if we're late!" the girl urged, dressed in a soft, creamy yellow knit dress and sporting flawless, cute makeup. She'd gone all out, hoping Joel would notice her.
"Man, it's Joel this, and Joel that. You can't stop talking about him, can you? Look, Chauntae, my buddy Joel has finally made it back. If you don't grab your chance now, maybe you two aren't meant to be together. Then, you should move on and pick someone else to crush on," Bradley Knightley joked.
"Bradley, look who's talking! You're single, too, you know," Chauntae Knightley shot right back.
"Hey! Getting bold now, huh? Talking back to me, your brother? I'm single, not because I can't find a girl. It's just that none of the girls in this town have caught my eye yet," Bradley said, all puffed up.
"Wow! So tell me, Bradley, the local heartthrob. What kind of girl could ever be good enough for you?" Chauntae teased, her words dripping with playful sarcasm.
However, after Chauntae asked, she realized Bradley, her brother, hadn't responded for ages. He was staring, completely transfixed by something outside the car window.
With a loud squeak, the car suddenly screeched to a halt.
"Ouch! My head! What the heck are you doing, Bradley?" Chauntae yelped, rubbing her forehead.
"Oh my god!" Bradley suddenly shouted, practically bouncing in his seat. "She's gorgeous! She's literally my dream girl! I'm telling you, I'm going after her!"
