"Who the heck is that? Seriously, why's he so worked up? Can anyone be that drop-dead gorgeous?" Chauntae wondered, half amused and half annoyed.
Puzzled, Chauntae shot a glance in Bradley's direction. She couldn't help but blush and feel her heart race when she saw the girl by the roadside with a face so beautiful that it seemed like a celestial being had descended to earth.
'No wonder Bradley totally lost it,' Chauntae admitted to herself.
"Look at her, she looks lost. Let me, a kind-hearted and destined person, show her the way!" Bradley declared, practically buzzing with excitement.
Bradley eagerly swung the car over, pulling up right in front of Kaia, and rolled down the window with flair.
"Hey there, gorgeous! Lost, are you? Where are you trying to go? Trust me, nobody knows this town better than I do," Bradley said, flashing his best smile.
"Bradley, seriously?" Chauntae gave him a look like she couldn't believe his antics. "You're gonna weird her out! She doesn't even know you."
Bradley's heart sank, and he thought, 'Crap. Chauntae is right. I don't even know her. If I kept being this enthusiastic, any normal girl would probably get spooked. Great, what if she bolts?'
Just as Bradley was starting to freak out, Kaia's calm, unhurried voice drifted over.
"You're a local? You know this place well?" she asked.
Bradley blinked, staring at Kaia. What threw him off was that Kaia didn't seem the least bit scared. 'Is she super naive or something? Does she not even know she should be careful around strangers?' Bradley wondered.
"Yeah, totally! So, where do you want to go? No worries, my sister's with me. We're harmless, promise," Bradley said, tossing Kaia his friendliest grin.
Kaia wasn't remotely bothered about whether they were good or bad. Honestly, she couldn't be less concerned.
Frankly, if they turned out to be trouble, they'd be the ones in for a surprise.
"I don't know exactly where I'm headed," Kaia replied, unfazed.
Upon hearing that, Bradley blinked, thrown for a loop. "You... You don't know? Well..."
"Do you know Joel Graham?" Kaia asked.
Bradley froze for a second, then he and Chauntae exchanged glances.
"You...You're looking for Joel?" Bradley stammered, clearly caught off guard.
Upon seeing their reaction and hearing Bradley's answer, Kaia figured they must know Joel.
'Well, that isn't much of a shock. Joel is kind of a local legend, famous even outside this county. Pretty much everyone here has heard of him,' thought Kaia.
"It's both his grandparents' birthday party today, so I'm here to pay my respects," Kaia said, her calm voice cutting through the tension.
Chauntae glared at Kaia like she was sizing up a rival. "You don't even know Joel, do you? How did you even hear about Joel's grandparents' birthday party? Honestly, are you trying to get close to Joel and steal his attention?"
She kept saying "Joel" every other sentence, to show Kaia who was boss around here. 'Back off, he's mine. Don't even think about it,' Chauntae thought, bristling with jealousy.
"Chauntae, you're being pretty harsh. Steal his attention? Don't jump to conclusions when you don't know the whole story," Bradley said. He was anxious that Chauntae would scare Kaia off.
"Bradley, don't let that vixen vibe fool you! She doesn't even know where Joel's family lives. Apparently, she doesn't know him. If she still insists on going to the birthday party, doesn't that scream she's up to something?" Chauntae huffed.
"Chauntae, you've gone too far! Who taught you to talk like that, calling people a vixen?" Bradley snapped, clearly annoyed.
"Me? How am I out of line? I'm just saying..." Chauntae retorted, her voice getting louder.
"Wait a minute!" Kaia jumped in smoothly, cutting off the argument. "It's getting late. Please drive me there, and I'll pay for the ride."
"Wow, you're serious? Did we ever say we'd give you a ride?" Chauntae shot back, rolling her eyes.
Kaia gave Chauntae a sly smile, unfazed by the hostile glare. "Why don't you take me over and find out for yourself if I actually know Joel or not?"
"No way am I taking you there! If I do, you'll try to make a move on Joel," Chauntae shot back, full of suspicion.
Kaia laughed. "You think Joel's that shallow? That he'd fall for a pretty face just like that?"
