"You're the shallow one! Joel's got eyes like a hawk. He knows exactly who's genuine and who's fake right away," Chauntae snapped, pride shining through.
"If that's true, what's there to be afraid of?" Kaia teased, her voice light but challenging.
Kaia used reverse psychology.
"Who's scared? I..." Chauntae stammered, at a total loss for words.
"If you're not scared, then prove it. Unlock the car," Kaia shot back without missing a beat.
Kaia's words nearly made Chauntae choke on hers.
"Alright, Chauntae, that's enough. Whether she knows Joel or not, she's here for Joel's grandparents. That's good enough for me," Bradley said, trying to calm things down.
Then, Bradley reached over and opened the car door for Kaia, inviting her to get in.
"Hmph!" Chauntae muttered angrily, turning her face away. "Whatever, Bradley. If Joel gets pissed later, you're the one who'll have to deal with it."
"Joel and I go way back. We're close friends. Trust me, he won't blow up at me," Bradley replied, completely confident.
"Yeah, sure! Keep defending her, Bradley! Looks like you'd rather help a pretty face than me, your sister," Chauntae said, rolling her eyes dramatically.
Joel's home was right in the center of town. With the county being pretty small, Kaia arrived quickly at the hotel for the birthday celebration, following Bradley and Chauntae.
As soon as Chauntae hopped out of the car, she raced straight into the hotel. The moment she laid eyes on Joel, she was all hearted eyes for him. Her whole vibe turned starry-eyed and smitten.
"Joel, I'm here!" Chauntae called enthusiastically, her voice practically bursting with excitement.
"Oh, Chauntae. Come in and have a seat. Where's your brother?" Joel asked warmly, looking around for Bradley.
"He's outside parking," Chauntae said, unable to hide her annoyance as soon as Joel mentioned Bradley.
"What happened? Did you two have a spat?" Joel asked with a gentle smile.
Chauntae puffed out her cheeks, fuming. "It's all Bradley's fault! He got totally bewitched by some vixen halfway here. He's doing whatever she says, even defending her against me in an argument."
"Vixen?" Joel repeated, eyebrows raised.
"Yeah! She's exactly that. She said she knew you, but I bet it's all fake. She's using Bradley to get close to you, hoping to make a move and steal your attention," Chauntae snorted, sounding super suspicious.
Right as Chauntae spoke, she spotted Kaia coming in beside Bradley.
"That's her! That's the vixen I was talking about!" Chauntae burst out, pointing straight at Kaia.
Joel, curious, glanced over at the door. The moment he saw Kaia, his body jolted. In a flash, he shot past Chauntae like a bolt of lightning.
Chauntae stood there, stunned, watching Joel practically sprint away. He was so out of character.
Chauntae thought, 'Oh no! This isn't good. Is that vixen that powerful? She didn't even say a word or do anything, just standing there by the door. Joel was already hooked?'
Regret hit Chauntae like a ton of bricks. 'If I'd known, I would've done anything to stop Bradley from letting her in the car,' Chauntae thought again, kicking herself for not acting sooner.
Bradley stood there, completely caught off guard as Joel came barreling over like a man possessed.
'What's up with Joel today?' Bradley thought. 'Is he always this worked up? We literally just saw each other at the hospital a couple of days ago. Even if we hadn't caught up in three years, he shouldn't be so exaggeratedly enthusiastic, should he?'
Before Bradley could wrap his head around it, Joel was already right in his face.
"Joel..." Bradley started to say, but Joel cut him off, practically bursting with urgency.
"Kaia, how did you get here?" Joel gasped, shocked and worried.
Kaia flashed him a gentle smile. "It's your grandparents' birthday party. How could I miss it?"
'She actually came for my family…' thought Joel. His heart melted, feeling genuinely touched.
"But aren't you putting yourself at risk by coming here?" Joel asked, concern written all over his face.
"Don't worry. I got here fine," Kaia replied, her voice steady and warm.
Suddenly, something clicked in Joel's mind. He snapped his gaze toward her, eyes darting anxiously behind Kaia, searching for another familiar face.
"Wait, where's Gideon? Seriously, where is he? Kaia, don't tell me you showed up here alone!" Joel burst out, sounding borderline frantic.
"If that's true, what's there to be afraid of?" Kaia teased, her voice light but challenging.
