Joel's voice rang out sharp and clear, and anyone listening could hear how on edge he was about Kaia.
Chauntae tugged anxiously at Bradley's sleeve, saying, "Bradley, I've never seen Joel so wound up over someone before. You think they're actually, you know, a thing?"
Bradley slumped, letting out a long sigh. "If that's how it is, I guess all we can do is wish them luck."
"Bradley!" Chauntae stomped her foot, visibly impatient.
"Alright, stop already. Honestly, those two are smart, good-looking. They do seem perfect for each other," Bradley said.
Kaia told Joel everything about Gideon, and Joel let out a frustrated sigh. "Gideon, the idiot. I picked him out from a crowd of elites because I trusted his skills and even liked his attitude. Who knew he'd pull a stunt like this and leave you having to travel all this way alone?"
"You can't blame him, though," Kaia replied. "He was so anxious about me that he actually waited outside my window in the rain."
"Don't go covering for him. Messing up is messing up. He failed in his job, period!" Joel said sternly. "I'll take you to Morganburg myself when my grandparents' birthday party is over. And with the International Scientific Research Exchange Seminar coming up, we need to start prepping everything ahead of time."
Upon seeing Joel looking all cold and stone-faced, Kaia tried to lighten the mood and playfully smiled. "Come on, chill out a little, will you? Your frown is intense right now. Anyway, forget all that. Where are your grandparents? I haven't even wished them happy birthday yet."
"Oh shoot, sorry. I've left you standing at the door all this time. Come on in! My grandparents are going to be so excited to see you. Seriously, they've been wanting to meet you forever," Joel said.
"Oh!" Joel stopped dead, rubbing his forehead. "See? Got so pumped I forgot. Given who you are, we can't tell my grandparents about it."
Kaia shrugged, her tone easy as she said, "They're your grandparents and your family. It's not a big deal if they know."
Joel paused, thinking it over. "Still, maybe not. They're pretty old now, and their hearts aren't so strong. If they get too excited..."
"Then, we'll wait for the right moment to share it," Kaia suggested.
"Yeah, that's all we can do for now," Joel agreed.
Watching Kaia and Joel bantering and laughing together, Chauntae glared, her cheeks puffing up with irritation.
"I've never seen Joel talking this easily with a girl before," Chauntae grumbled.
"Same here. Guess they're a thing now," Bradley said, sounding more and more bummed out.
Chauntae couldn't help but protest, "That's not fair. I met Joel first!"
Then, Chauntae marched right over toward Kaia.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Bradley reached out and grabbed Chauntae's arm.
"Mind your own business!" Chauntae shot back, yanking her arm free.
By the time Chauntae got over there, Kaia was already offering her birthday wishes to Joel's grandparents.
Joel's grandparents were practically smitten. "Joel, is the girl you brought home to be our granddaughter-in-law? She's absolutely gorgeous!"
"Grandma, Grandpa, you've got it all wrong," Joel jumped in. "We're just good friends. Nothing more, I promise."
Bradley hurried over after Chauntae. As soon as they got close enough to hear Joel, they instantly brightened up, clearly looking much happier.
"See? I totally called it. That girl is delusional. Joel's way too good for a shallow, gold-digging vixen like her. I'm different. I couldn't care less about Joel's money. I like him for who he is," Chauntae said smugly.
Bradley wasn't convinced. "How do you know she's only interested in Joel's money?"
"Because I'm a girl, and you wouldn't understand," Chauntae shot back.
As Chauntae finished talking, she saw Kaia pull out two gift boxes.
