"Let's see what she's got for a present. I mean, look at her. She probably went for something cheap anyway," Chauntae muttered with a roll of her eyes.
Bradley was starting to think Chauntae was way out of line. "She came all this way to celebrate their birthday. It's the thought that counts, not what's in the box, right?"
"Bradley! Why do you always take her side? She's trying to steal your future brother-in-law!" Chauntae stomped her foot in frustration.
'Future brother-in-law?' Bradley thought a little helplessly. He'd tried to sound Joel out a while back for Chauntae's sake, and it was clear as day. Joel only ever saw Chauntae as a friend.
Of course, Bradley'd never breathed a word of that to Chauntae. Firstly, he didn't want to break her heart. Secondly, as Chauntae's obsession with Joel, saying anything was pointless. Chauntae would keep chasing Joel tirelessly, no matter what.
Chauntae shot Bradley a glare, then strode right up to Kaia. Upon seeing Joel's grandparents about to set the gifts aside, Chauntae quickly spoke up, "Mr. Graham and Mrs. Graham, Miss Bennett picked these gifts especially for you. Why not open them and take a look?"
"Well..." Joel's grandparents exchanged a look. It wasn't proper to open gifts in front of everyone.
Chauntae could tell what they were thinking and kept pushing. "Mr. Graham and Mrs. Graham, Miss Bennett is Joel's good friend. She doesn't mind. Miss Bennett, right?"
Kaia just shrugged, unfazed. "Go ahead and open them."
'Seriously? She wants Jannik and Esther Graham to open the gifts right here?' Chauntae curled her lip, snarky as ever. 'Let her show off. She's just begging to embarrass herself.'
Everyone crowded around, curious to see what Kaia had brought.
Esther Graham was the first one to crack open the wooden box, and when she saw the pearl necklace lying inside, her jaw about hit the floor.
Chauntae and the other guests all looked stunned. Nobody could believe their eyes.
"Whoa, are you seeing this? Those pearls are massive! And totally perfect. How much would something like this even cost?" one of the guests blurted out in disbelief.
"I work at a jewelry shop. Usually, a single decent 0.4-inch pearl goes for a few hundred dollars. Each of these is at least 0.6 inches, and every one of them is totally flawless and gorgeously shiny. With pearls like these, I'd guess well over ten thousand dollars," another guest chimed in, sounding seriously impressed.
"No freaking way! A necklace worth over ten thousand dollars? That's insane—talk about splashing out!" someone else said, practically gaping.
Chauntae nearly choked, her jaw dropping. 'Are you kidding me? She whipped out an over-ten-thousand-dollar pearl necklace like it was no big deal? My savings are only about seven thousand dollars! Is Kaia seriously loaded?'
Bradley wilted, barely holding back a sigh. "Man, what's her background, anyway? Is she actually some rich family heiress? And the more I listen, the more she sounds straight out of Morganburg. What if she's, like, one of those ultrarich socialites from the city? If that's true, I might as well forget about chasing her."
Just then, one of the guests nudged the crowd, making everyone's gaze land right on the box Jannik Graham was holding.
"Mr. Graham, come on, what'd you get in that box?" someone piped up, half-joking.
"Yeah, hurry up and crack it open!" another voice echoed, getting everyone even more hyped up.
The room was buzzing. Everyone was basically leaning in, desperate to see what the other present could be.
Chauntae perked up, too, craning her neck for a better view, curiosity written all over her face.
"Alright, alright," Jannik managed, his hands trembling a bit as all eyes fell on him. He drew in a deep, steadying breath, heart beating a little faster from the excitement, before finally popping open the box.
