When the box was opened, everyone could hear a string of surprised gasps.
Inside the box lay a remarkably rare wild ginseng.
"The ginseng looks like it's a wild one," someone knowledgeable finally remarked.
Kaia nodded. "Exactly. Wild ginseng packs way more nutrients. Joel told me Mr. Graham loves his drinks, so I went out of my way to get this one for him."
"The ginseng must be at least as valuable as that pearl necklace, right?" Bradley couldn't help but blur out.
"What do you know?" The expert on ginseng shot him a glare. "With its size, shape, and how perfectly it's been preserved, you can't put a price on something like this."
"Wh... What do you mean?" Bradley looked completely baffled.
"It means this kind of ginseng is priceless. Something you couldn't buy even if you had all the money in the world," the man explained.
Once he said that, the whole banquet hall went so silent that only the sound of breathing could be heard.
Once Jannik finally came to his senses, he handed the gift back to Kaia. "Miss Bennett, this is too generous. I... I can't accept it. And for that pearl necklace, we can't take it either."
Kaia shot Joel a look, and Joel immediately caught her meaning, turning to his grandparents.
"Come on, take it. She came all this way just for this. If you turn her down now, she'd only end up leaving here disappointed," Joel said.
Joel might be the youngest in the family, but when he spoke, his words carried serious weight.
"Well then, we'll accept her gifts since you insist," Jannik finally agreed.
After Jannik had accepted the presents, he leaned over and quietly asked Joel, "Who is this friend of yours, anyway? How is she able to be so generous with presents like these?"
"It's not convenient to talk about it right now. I'll explain after the party," Joel replied.
"Alright," Jannik said.
Halfway through the party, Chauntae and Bradley teamed up and each made their move. Chauntae went straight for Kaia, while Bradley headed for Joel.
Chauntae didn't dare underestimate Kaia anymore, not seeing her as someone chasing Joel's money and status. Now, her eyes were practically shooting daggers at Kaia, brimming with the jealousy and hostility of a love rival.
"Hey, are you from one of the elite families in Morganburg or something?" Chauntae demanded.
Kaia shook her head and said, "No."
"Yeah, as if," Chauntae snorted.
Chauntae was sure that Kaia had to come from a wealthy background. No one else could give out gifts like that.
"Okay, I'll admit it," Chauntae said, her tone full of rivalry. "You were born with a silver spoon. You're way prettier than I, and you have that whole aura. So what? I got the best grades, and I even placed second in our county's writing contest. Joel isn't shallow. He's not just going to fall for a pretty face. Besides, we grew up together. In the end, he'll choose me, not you."
Kaia took a sip of her juice and shot Chauntae an amused smile. "Go for it! Maybe you'll get to be Joel's wife soon and start a whole family with him."
"I..." Chauntae was left completely speechless. She'd rehearsed all kinds of comebacks before coming over, but nothing she'd planned could deal with Kaia's unpredictable playbook.
Meanwhile, Bradley finally tore his eyes away from Kaia and turned to Joel.
"So, you and Kaia aren't dating?" Bradley asked.
"Of course not," Joel replied.
Bradley gave Joel a long, searching look before making up his mind.
"Looks like you're telling the truth," Bradley said.
'Man, this is my chance,' Blake secretly thrilled for a moment. Then, he said, "So, do you think I have a shot with her?"
Joel had figured out Bradley had a thing for Kaia when Chauntae told him about what happened on the way here.
"Not a chance," Joel replied flatly.
