Joel could tell that Kaia was saying that for his sake.
"Alright. Miss Bennett, since you have said so, let's all go together tonight," Joel said.
Bradley was getting more and more curious about who Kaia really was. 'Tonight, I'm determined to dig up the truth and figure out why Joel seems so tense about her,' he thought.
That evening, they hung out at the hot dog stand.
Joel handed Kaia a freshly grilled meat skewer. "Go ahead. It's good to eat now."
"Thanks," Kaia replied with a smile, taking it from him.
Isaac slung his arm around Bradley's shoulders and whispered, "Who's that girl? Don't tell me she's Joel's girlfriend?"
"I asked him. He said she's not," Bradley replied.
"No way? Seriously? You think he's lying to you? Look at how he's treating her. Have you ever seen him act like this with any other girl?" Isaac pressed.
"Joel wouldn't lie to me," Bradley said, sounding sure.
Chauntae couldn't help but stew as she watched Kaia. 'Why is Joel being so nice to her? And why are they sitting so close together?' thought Chauntae.
Kaia didn't pay Chauntae's jealousy any mind. 'No point worrying about it,' Kaia told herself. 'I'll be out of here anyway by tomorrow morning.'
After a while, Kaia felt the need to use the restroom. "Where's the restroom?" she asked.
"It's a bit of a walk. I'll take you there," Joel said, standing up.
But Chauntae immediately volunteered and said, "Let me take her. Seriously, it's weird for a guy to go with her."
"Yeah, exactly!" Isaac said, pushing Joel back into his seat. "What kind of dude follows a girl to the restroom anyway? Besides, you never answered my question earlier. Who is Dr. Bennett, really?"
At the mention of Dr. Bennett, all of Joel's former classmates stopped eating and turned to look at Joel.
Kaia glanced over at Joel, who was clearly getting exasperated, but she stifled a chuckle and headed off after Chauntae.
Chauntae was simmering with jealousy the whole way, and by the time they reached the restroom, she couldn't hold back her questions any longer.
"Hey! Are you seriously telling me you don't have feelings for Joel?" Chauntae blurted out.
Kaia had figured out why Chauntae was so eager to volunteer.
"I've got someone I'm interested in," Kaia replied calmly.
Chauntae glared at her, eyes wide. "For real?"
Kaia couldn't help but think of Tobias's handsome face, and she was smiling at herself before she knew it.
"He's great. I'm thinking of giving it a shot with him," Kaia said.
Women know women best. Chauntae had been watching Kaia's every expression and tone, and it all reminded her of how she acted around Joel.
"Wait, don't tell me it's Joel?" Chauntae blurted out.
Kaia stopped and offered Chauntae a reassuring smile.
"Honestly, you can relax when it comes to me. I've told you it before! Joel and I are friends, and we also work together every single day, so we've got a pretty solid bond. But trust me, it's nothing like what you're worried about," Kaia said with a reassuring smile.
"Okay, I trust you," Chauntae replied, finally letting out a sigh of relief.
However, a group of men suddenly emerged and blocked their way as Chauntae finished her words.
"Hey, gorgeous. It's late and I'm bored. How about you come have some fun with us?" one of them said, flashing a sleazy grin.
Chauntae's heart lurched. Her legs nearly gave out from fear.
"Who are you guys?" Kaia demanded, shooting a wary glare at the men now closing in around them.
They looked like street punks, but Kaia couldn't shake the thought that they might be assassins in disguise, trying to trick her into letting her guard down.
"Whoa, didn't notice you before, gorgeous. You're even hotter than any TV star," the leader sneered, his magenta hair and dragon tattoo screaming trouble.
