Chauntae's face turned ghostly pale, her voice shaking as she said, "You guys better back off! My brother's classmate is Joel Graham, the King of Boxing! If you touch me, Joel will make sure you're picking up your teeth for days!"
Chauntae's words cracked the whole gang up. They burst out laughing.
"You hear that? She thinks she knows Joel!" one of them snorted.
"Hilarious. Listen, gorgeous. Joel's my buddy. If anyone's calling him, it's me, not you," the leader crowed, laughing even harder.
Chauntae's nerves were fraying. These thugs weren't buying her story, and panic was starting to settle in.
Just then, the leader lunged forward, grabbing her clothes.
Chauntae shrieked, "No!"
However, before Chauntae could even move, Kaia lashed out with a lightning-fast kick, smashing her heel into the guy's leg.
There was a sickening crack. The unmistakable sound of bone snapping.
The leader collapsed instantly, dropping to his knees right before Kaiain and Chauntae.
Chauntae looked at Kaia, who seemed totally chill, then at the thug screaming like crazy. It totally blew her mind.
"Whoa, that was amazing!" Chauntae blurted out, her eyes wide with awe.
Then Chauntae remembered what Kaia said earlier that she and Joel were coworkers. 'Hold on, is she one of those people who protect Dr. Bennett, too? Otherwise, how can she be so badass?' Chauntae thought to herself.
"Damn it! You little bitch. You pissed me off! Tonight, I'm gonna make you beg to live and wish you were dead, but you won't get either!" the leader spat, rage burning in his eyes.
He leveled a murderous glare at Kaia, then yanked a knife from his pocket.
As soon as he did, the rest of his crew scrambled to pull out their own weapons—shiny switchblades, rusted pipes, anything they could threaten with.
Chauntae felt her fear explode inside her, panic taking over as the situation grew more dangerous.
Kaia whipped around and shouted to Chauntae, "Get out of here, now!"
"But... What about you?" Chauntae gasped, her voice shaking with panic.
"Forget about me! They've got knives, but they're nowhere near enough to take me down. Just run and get Joel," Kaia ordered, already launching herself at them.
Chauntae, frantic with worry, stomped her foot before finally mustering her courage, then turned and sprinted off.
"That bitch is getting away!" one of the thugs shouted.
"Stop her!" another yelled.
Chauntae stumbled, her legs almost giving out as terror gripped her.
"Think you can mess with her when I'm standing right here? Not a chance!" Kaia snapped. Quick as a flash, she swiped a phone from the pocket of the guy lunging at her and whipped it right at the head of the thug going after Chauntae.
The phone nailed the guy square in the back of the head.
He let out a howl and went down hard, crashing to the ground.
'She's incredible!' Chauntae gasped inwardly, awe flickering in her eyes. However, upon seeing Kaia surrounded like that, she couldn't help but feel a knot of worry twist in her stomach.
Kaia was strong, but she couldn't fight off so many at once, especially when they were all armed.
'I can't wait any longer. I have to get Joel fast!' Chauntae urged herself, spinning around and bolting away to find Joel.
Joel had lost all interest in his food. He kept glancing over at the spot where Kaia had disappeared, unable to shake the feeling that something was wrong.
Upon seeing Joel's restlessness, Isaac couldn't help but tease him.
"Come on, Joel, you totally lied to us, didn't you? You and Kaia are definitely a thing. Otherwise, why are you so worried about her?" Isaac said, shooting Joel an exaggerated wink.
Bradley piped up with a laugh, egging him on. "Wow, Joel, you've changed! You're actually learning how to lie!"
Normally, Joel would have fired back with some playful banter, but right now, he was way too anxious. There was no way he had the energy to mess around with them.
"You guys eat without me. I'm gonna go see what's going on," Joel said, springing to his feet.
Joel had stood up when the guys jumped in and blocked his path.
"Alright, you can go, but only if you come clean first! Just admit that you and Kaia are officially boyfriend and girlfriend, and we'll let you leave," Isaac pressed, shooting him a smug grin.
