To his amazement, Kaia hadn't even gotten a scratch despite all that chaos with a bunch of armed punks. 'Damn, looks like she's a real fighter herself,' Bradley thought, seriously impressed.
"Hey!" Joel shouted, throwing the last thug hard against the wall. He slammed his foot down on the guy's chest, holding him down mercilessly.
"Spit it out! Who sent you to assassinate her?" Joel demanded, his voice cold and threatening.
The thug coughed up blood, scrabbling for mercy. "It's a misunderstanding! I swear, nobody sent us! We only messed with her 'cause she's pretty!"
"Not gonna talk? Then I'll beat it out of you!" Joel growled, fist cocked and ready to swing again.
Kaia stepped in and said, "Hold up. Don't beat him yet."
Just like that, Joel's fist froze in mid-air.
Kaia walked up next to Joel and said, "I went up against them just then. They're complete amateurs, flailing around with zero skill. There's no way the real assassins would be that sloppy."
Joel nodded and said, "But the real hitmen might be using these guys to test you out."
Kaia rubbed her chin thoughtfully, saying, "You've got a point."
Chauntae watched in confusion. She tugged Bradley's sleeve and said, "Bradley, what are they talking about? Hitmen? Assassins? And why does Joel listen to Kaia like she's his boss or something?"
'Boss?' The word crashed through Bradley's mind like a tidal wave. He couldn't calm down, and his gaze locked onto Kaia with shock and awe.
'Kaia... Her last name is Bennett!' Bradley thought, the realization hitting him harder every second.
It wasn't long before the local police officers showed up.
"Who called this in?" Wilbur Frusher, the police captain, asked as he walked over.
"It was me," Chauntae said, pointing at the thugs sprawled all over the place. "They tried to hit on us and got violent when we turned them down."
Wilbur took in the scene, the thugs scattering everywhere, and weapons lying around. He couldn't help but suck in a sharp breath.
'Who the hell could've wrecked these guys this badly?' Wilbur wondered, eyes wide in disbelief.
"What on earth happened to them...?" Wilbur muttered, still in shock.
"I did it," Joel said, turning to face Wilbur.
"Joel Graham, the legend himself!" Wilbur stammered, eyes wide in shock.
Wilbur was totally caught off guard. He never expected Joel, the big shot in town, to be involved in this. Now he knew he had to take this seriously.
"What exactly happened here?" Wilbur asked, trying to wrap his head around it.
Joel glanced over at Kaia and said, "I think they're working for some kind of International assassination organization."
"Wait, what?" Wilbur blinked, thrown for a loop. "Aren't these guys just street thugs? How could they have anything to do with an international assassination organization?"
Wilbur thought, 'Assassinate who, Joel? Who would even be crazy enough to try taking Joel out? That's impossible!'
'If they're not here for Joel, who else could be a target that's this important?'
Wilbur scanned the room as the thought ran through his mind, finally settling his gaze on Kaia.
Wilbur thought again, 'Is it just my imagination, or does Joel's eyes always linger on that girl whenever he is talking? Like she is the real reason behind all this tension.
'There is an aura about the girl. She looks like somebody. Is she some heiress? Maybe those killers are after her, planning to snatch her up for a ransom?'
"Mr. Frusher, can I have a word with you?" Joel asked, pulling him aside.
Bradley and the crew watched Wilbur's face twisted with disbelief, like he'd been hit with some earth-shattering news.
Joel spoke with total seriousness. "You have to look into this, and I mean really go all out. Don't take things at face value. I'm telling you, these punks aren't just random troublemakers. There's something darker lurking under the surface."
"Absolutely! I'll launch a full investigation. No one will lay a finger on Dr. Bennett on my watch!" Wilbur declared, the resolve in his voice clear as day.
Then, Wilbur strode over to Kaia and, with all the formality he could muster, snapped off a sharp salute in her direction.
