Joel gave Bradley a nod, signaling they could go ahead.
Bradley and the crew could barely contain themselves. They were practically bouncing with excitement.
"Alright, everyone, calm down! Line up and take it slow. Let's not scare Dr. Bennett," Bradley said, playing traffic cop to keep everyone in order.
The whole morning was a whirlwind. Everyone was buzzing with excitement. After a lively breakfast, Kaia and Joel caught a flight back to Morganburg together.
Things were about to get serious, and it was time for Kaia to say her goodbyes to Tobias.
"I'm off," Kaia called out, dragging her suitcase down the stairs.
Tobias furrowed his brows, looking reluctant. "I hate seeing you leave."
"Relax, it's only a couple of weeks," Kaia replied, totally unbothered.
"Seriously, do you even have a heart?" Tobias shot back, halfway teasing, halfway exasperated.
Then, Tobias wrapped his arms around Kaia's waist, hugging her tightly.
Upon seeing how much he didn't want to let her go, Kaia gave in and let him hold her close.
"Just let me breathe your scent one more time," Tobias said softly, face buried in the crook of her neck, drinking in that one-of-a-kind herbal scent that belonged only to her.
Kaia rolled her eyes, honestly speechless at Tobias.
"Seriously? What scent could you possibly be sniffing on me?" Kaia shot back, half exasperated, half amused.
"No way, you definitely have a scent, and I'm gonna remember it for the rest of my life. Plus, I've marked you—so when we meet again, I'll check if you smell like anyone else. And if you do..." Tobias's voice was low and dangerously possessive.
Tobias squinted, his dark eyes glinting with that scary, intense look he always got when he was jealous.
Kaia could practically feel Tobias's mood flip—one second possessive puppy, the next cold front rolling in. 'Seriously, this guy changes faster than the weather,' she thought, even more speechless.
"And what exactly are you gonna do if I do?" Kaia shot back, her tone full of playful challenge.
As soon as she finished, Tobias's arms around her waist tightened, his grip suddenly fierce.
But even as he held her close, Kaia could feel him holding back, careful not to hurt her.
"I'll make sure that person ends up in the deepest pits of hell," Tobias growled, his voice so cold it felt like it was coming straight from the underworld.
Kaia was silent for a couple of seconds before gently pushing him away.
"Hey, don't just make this about me. What about you? With that lady-killer face of yours, you attract swarms of girls everywhere you go," Kaia shot back, half-teasing and half-genuinely annoyed.
Tobias flashed her a mischievous grin. "Oh? Is that a hint of jealousy I'm hearing?"
"Stop deflecting," Kaia grumbled, trying to sound tough.
As she spoke, Kaia glanced away, unable to handle Tobias's ridiculously charming smile. It was downright dangerous, and honestly, she could feel her heart pounding like crazy.
"Alright, I won't change the subject. I'm answering for real this time," Tobias said, his tone earnest but with that playful edge.
Tobias's eyes locked onto Kaia, intense and full of unshakeable devotion. "Kaia, I swear. I won't let any other girl come buzzing anywhere near me. You're the only one for me, and I'll stay faithful to you, and only you."
Kaia had heard Tobias's confession more times than she could count, but she couldn't keep her cool this time. Tobias's raw sincerity—so real it made her chest tighten—left her completely thrown off.
With every passing second, Kaia's face seemed to get hotter and hotter. She could practically feel the blush climbing all the way to her ears.
'Oh no! He's going to see right through me at this rate!' she thought, her inner panic spiking.
Kaia faked a couple of coughs, hoping to cool herself off and cover up how flustered she was.
"Pure as a saint, huh? Come on, you're 25. Are you seriously telling me you've never even touched another woman?" Kaia teased, darting him a skeptical look, though deep down she was dying to know if he was for real.
Before she could get another word out, Tobias tumbled her onto the couch, his strong chest pressed firmly against hers.
His face was so close that their noses brushed together, the heat between them palpable.
Kaia swore she could hear her heartbeat thundering in her ears, and each beat was faster than the last.
She couldn't even tell if it was hers or his. Their bodies were so close. It was impossible to separate the two.
