"Wh... What are you doing?" Kaia blurted out, her voice quivering as her heart raced.
Tobias shot her a devilish grin, his gaze openly roaming over her. The wild hunger in his eyes was unmistakable, like he was barely holding back a predator inside.
"You seriously think I'm not a natural, unpolished gem? Fine. How about you test it out yourself and see what you think?" Tobias drawled, his tone drenched in playful challenge.
Upon hearing Tobias's words, Kaia felt her face blush in an instant, her cheeks burning as her heartbeat skipped. 'God, why is he like this?' she thought in a panic.
"Are you seriously trying to mess with me?" Kaia shot back, her voice flustered and a bit indignant.
Tobias reached out, twisting a strand of her hair around his finger. His touch infuriatingly gentle and full of mischief.
"Absolutely. I'm not even trying to hide it. I want to tease you," Tobias answered, his voice dripping with shameless swagger.
"Move, now! If you don't, I swear I'll make you regret it," Kaia snapped, her voice tinged with embarrassment and irritation.
Tobias let out a low, mischievous chuckle, clearly enjoying himself.
"What's so funny?" Kaia demanded, face flushed with heat.
"Just laughing at how adorable you are right now, acting all shy and nervous, like some bashful little girl," Tobias teased, his voice full of lazy charm.
As he said the last few words, he deliberately leaned in, letting his lips get close to her ear, his breath warm and teasing.
Her body shivered. Her ears had always been her sensitive spot. Kaia sucked in a breath and, in a sudden burst, pushed Tobias away, flustered.
"You're pushing your luck," Kaia snapped, her face still burning hot.
"Wrong. I'm grabbing whatever I can," Tobias shot back, unabashed and cocky.
Kaia rolled her eyes so hard that it was a miracle they didn't get stuck. "Honestly, you are the most shameless guy I've ever met."
Tobias just grinned, unfazed. "So, that makes me the guy who's copped the most feelings from you, right?"
'Not a chance I'll answer that,' Kaia thought, utterly refusing to dignify it.
"It's late. I don't have time to stand here wasting words with you. I'm outta here," Kaia said, voice crisp and no-nonsense.
Then, Kaia grabbed her suitcase and headed for the door.
"Wait, let me walk you out," Tobias called, hurrying after her.
The moment they stepped outside, Devin blocked their way.
"Boss, it's time to go. We'll end up delaying the schedule if we wait any longer, and Dr. Bennett's not someone we can keep waiting," Devin urged.
Upon hearing that, Tobias could only give up on seeing Kaia out.

At the airport, Kaia had herself wrapped up tight: a baseball cap pulled way down and a mask hiding all but her eyes. She was doing her best not to be recognized.
Joel was by her side, and a sizeable contingent of soldiers in tactical gear formed a protective barrier around her.
With that kind of entourage, anyone passing by would have no trouble guessing who she was.
Some people watched the drama, while others stared at her with open admiration in their eyes.
"Whoa! That's Dr. Bennett! I finally got to see her in person! Too bad she's so far away. I can barely make her out!" someone in the crowd exclaimed.
"I think you're being ungrateful. If it weren't for the International Scientific Research Exchange Seminar, you'd never even catch a glimpse of her. Want to get up close and see her clearly? Dreaming," another person scoffed.
"Seriously, Dr. Bennett is important! If anyone could walk up to her, what if some creep tried something shady? That'd be a huge risk," someone else added.
"Enough talk. Snap some photos already," someone else urged.
The International Scientific Research Exchange Seminar was on an unprecedented scale, so the whole event was being livestreamed across every official platform.

At the Bennett family residence, Ruth watched the spectacular scene on TV, sighed, and then shot Andrea a look full of undisguised disappointment.
Ruth said, "I thought you'd come out on top in that Morganburg University competition, get picked for Dr. Bennett's lab, and finally make your dad and me proud. Maybe even put our family in the spotlight for once. But now, I have no idea what's going to happen to you."
