Andrea felt a tight lump in her chest. Hearing Ruth's words made it worse. She had no appetite left and silently pushed her food aside, fists clenched hard under the table.
Lincoln exhaled a long stream of smoke, his disappointment as obvious as Ruth's. He didn't say a word and didn't need to.
"Wait a second..." Ruth murmured. Her eyes glued to the TV as she stared at Dr. Bennett's silhouette.
"What is it?" Lincoln asked with concern.
"Don't you think Dr. Bennett looks an awful lot like someone we know from a distance?" Ruth said, her tone laced with suspicion.
Upon hearing her words, Lincoln turned his attention to the TV, studying Dr. Bennett in the midst of the crowd. The longer he looked, the deeper his frown grew.
Andrea also watched it quietly. Back at the new nanomaterial launch, she'd caught a glimpse of way across the room, but it had been impossible to see clearly. Now, with the camera zoomed in much closer, she couldn't shake the feeling that Dr. Bennett's figure did look like that person.
"So, you think she kinda has the same build as Kaia?" Lincoln said bluntly, not caring one bit. His words laced with mockery.
"Come on, there are all sorts of weird coincidences in the world. Because they look a little alike doesn't mean anything. Comparing Kaia to Dr. Bennett? That's like a firefly thinking it can compete with the sun," Lincoln sneered.
Ruth nodded, agreeing. "True enough."
Then, Ruth turned her gaze back to the TV, staring at Dr. Bennett. "Wow, Dr. Bennett looks so young. She's about the same age as our kid! Seriously, she's the kind of child every parent dreams of. I'm so jealous! If I had a superstar kid, a national treasure, like her, I'd probably wake up laughing in the middle of the night."
"Well, what's the point in fantasizing? Reality is what it is. Look at you, with that ungrateful brat you brought into the world. Good thing we kicked her out. Just seeing her face is enough to piss me off," Lincoln grumbled, feeling his anger rise as soon as Kaia came to mind.
At the mention of Kaia, Ruth's expression twisted, like she'd eaten a bug.
"No more talking about Kaia," Ruth muttered.
Andrea caught the sour looks on her parents' faces and felt relieved secretly. 'Sure, I embarrassed myself, but at least Kaia is there to be the Bennett family's favorite scapegoat,' Andrea thought.

Kaia noticed that Victor, the team leader, still hadn't moved. She frowned and asked, "It's almost time. Why aren't we leaving yet?"
Victor replied, "We're waiting for someone important."
"Who?" Kaia asked, her curiosity piqued.
"I only got the news yesterday as well. Apparently, the higher-ups arranged for a representative from the Wustriland Economic Circle to join us," Victor explained.
Kaia frowned, and before she could even process what was going on, a familiar voice suddenly called out.
"Grandpa, it's me! Please let me in!"
It was none other than Kiera, Victor's granddaughter.
"What are you doing here?" Victor snapped, his patience wearing thin.
Kiera peeked at Kaia out of the corner of her eye, then blurted out, "I want to come along. I want to help to protect Dr. Bennett, too!"
When Victor heard that, his face instantly went from annoyed to deeply confused, twisting into the most awkward expression imaginable.
"Grandpa!" Kiera whined, clinging to his arm and giving it a playful shake.
"Please let me go with you! With my combat skills, I could help. And you already know I'm a huge fan of Dr. Bennett. I want a chance to get closer to her. Who knows, maybe she'll appreciate how direct I am and make me her friend!"
The more Kiera went on, the more Victor's expression grew strange and awkward.
"Grandpa, please?" Kiera whined, her voice sweet and pleading.
"Stop fooling around! Go home, now!" Victor snapped, his tone leaving no room for argument.
"Grandpa..." Kiera whined again, her voice dragging out in a long, pitiful drawl.
"Someone, take her away," Victor ordered, his patience completely gone.
"Grandpa!" Kiera cried out, but she was already being dragged off.
Kiera wasn't about to give up that easily. 'Just because they're dragging me away doesn't mean I can't sneak onto the plane,' she thought, her mind racing. 'I'd come prepared with a backup plan. If Grandpa doesn't let me tag along, I'd have to put Plan B into action.'
Victor turned to Kaia and apologized, "Sorry. My granddaughter's been a hassle for you again."
"No big deal," Kaia replied, brushing it off.
Kaia waved it off. Then, a familiar voice spoke softly right in her ear.
"Sorry, I'm late," the voice said.
