Kaia's eyes narrowed sharply. She didn't even need to turn around to know who had arrived. She instantly figured out who Victor had meant with "the business representative."
'Why is it Tobias?' thought Joel. He almost let his surprise show, his eyes darting nervously between Tobias and Kaia as his heart hammered in his chest.
Victor gave Tobias a friendly smile and said, "No worries. Traffic's always a nightmare at this hour."
Then, he shot a quick, subtle glance at Kaia.
Victor used to think Tobias spoiled Kaia because Tobias knew who Kaia truly was, but he found out later that things were not as he had thought.
Tobias nodded at Victor, then shifted his attention to Kaia.
"Dr. Bennett, nice to see you again," Tobias greeted Kaia.
Kaia steadied herself, an unexpected calm settling over her mind.
"Long time no see," she replied.
For some reason, the last time Tobias had seen Dr. Bennett was at the nanomaterial launch event. Even then, he'd found her strangely familiar.
Now, with them standing face to face, that sense of familiarity tugged even harder at Tobias—almost unsettling, like deja vu he couldn't shake.
Kaia didn't directly meet Tobias's eyes, but she could sense his gaze locked onto her.
'Is he getting suspicious?' Kaia wondered, unease flickering in her mind.
"Let's go," Kaia said, and started walking away without waiting for anyone to follow.
She missed her step and nearly tripped because of distraction.
"Look out!" Tobias was right there, reacting fast and grabbed Kaia's arm before she could fall.
The moment Tobias's fingers brushed Kaia's skin, that familiar feeling flooded his senses again, and his grip tightened a bit as if he couldn't help himself. 'So familiar...' Tobias thought, the sensation lingering.
"Thanks," Kaia muttered, quickly pulling her arm back and avoiding his eyes.
"You okay?" Joel asked with concern.
"I'm fine. I wasn't watching where I was going," Kaia replied.
"That's good, then," Joel said.
"Yeah, let's go," Kaia said.
As Kaia strode away, Tobias's frown deepened, the lines on his brow tightening. His gaze lingered on his fingers that had just touched her. It was that electrifying, tingling feeling again. Nobody else ever made him feel that way but her.
Almost unconsciously, Tobias raised his hand to his nose, inhaling the tips of his fingers. Instantly, a spark lit in his big eyes.
Tobias thought, 'That faint trace of medicine… Damn, it's her scent. So familiar it almost drives me crazy.
'Could it be...?' Suspicion swirled through his mind, sensation and memory colliding.
Watching Kaia's silhouette fade into the corridor, Tobias couldn't help but smirk. Determined, he strode after her without hesitation.
Meanwhile, the Bennett family was glued to the TV, utterly absorbed. When they saw Tobias also appear in the live broadcast, they were so shocked that their jaws almost dropped to the floor.
"What the hell is happening? Isn't that the brat who's always trailing after Kaia? How is he with Dr. Bennett?" Ruth blurted out, her disbelief written all over her face.
Lincoln stopped mid-motion, his cigarette dangling forgotten between his fingers. The calm he'd worn moments ago vanished, replaced by shock as he stared, wide-eyed, at the screen.
Andrea's fists were clenched so tight that her knuckles blanched. Her jaw set firmly, and it felt like she might crack a tooth.
Back at the Morganburg University research competition, when Andrea saw Tobias sitting with the Moreno Group reps, she'd started wondering about his real identity.
However, she wasn't sure. Tobias might be some regular Moreno Group staffer sent to fill a seat. 'Who knows? He might've been another face in their crowd,' Andrea mused.
The second Melvin called, Lincoln's phone buzzed loud enough to snap everyone out of their shock.
"Hey, Dad, what's up?" Lincoln said, though he was pretty sure he knew exactly why Melvin was calling.
