"Come on, what do you think? Don't tell me you're not watching the live broadcast! It's the big day today. Everybody in Morganburg, heck, pretty much all of Wustriland, is glued to that stream if they've got nothing better to do!" Melvin sounded half exasperated, half hyped.
And Melvin wasn't exaggerating. Today, everyone in Wustriland had their eyes locked on the screen, all waiting for that moment.
After all, Dr. Bennett's live appearance today was the kind of thing nobody wanted to miss.
"Tell me, why is that kid hanging around Dr. Bennett?" Melvin asked, his voice sharp. He'd seen Tobias with Kaia more than once before.
"Well..." Lincoln hesitated. Honestly, he was just as puzzled himself.
"Maybe... That Tobias guy is one of the regular staff," Lincoln guessed.
That actually made sense. Tobias wasn't the only one there. There were plenty of other staff members milling around.
They couldn't think of any other reason, and nobody thought Tobias was anything special. If he was, Kaia would've made a big deal out of it already.
"Yeah, that's probably it," Melvin agreed with a nod.
Lincoln stared at Tobias on the screen, paused momentarily, then said, "Dad, we've kicked Kaia out, like you and Mom always wanted. She has nothing to do with us anymore, so there's no point worrying about the identity of that guy who's with Kaia, right?"
"What's that supposed to mean? Are you blaming me for kicking Kaia out?" Melvin shot back, his voice sharp.
"No. I'm just stating the facts. Kaia... She's never coming back. Even if we wanted her to..." Lincoln didn't get to finish his words before Melvin cut him off, his voice booming.
"No way! She's never coming back! I said it at the family meeting. Someone like her, useless, disrespectful, and always lying, has been a laughingstock for the Bennett family. We'll never accept her. It's either me or her in this family! She's not coming back unless I'm dead! And even if I die, she's not coming back!" Melvin shouted, his voice shaking with rage.
After he finished chewing Lincoln out, Melvin dropped a message in the family group chat and tagged everyone, making sure the whole Bennett clan saw his tirade word for word.
In the first-class cabin of the airplane, Kaia had settled into her seat when Tobias dropped himself into the one right next to her with barely a warning.
Kaia stiffened for a moment, turning her head slightly away. 'Great!' she thought, before saying, "What do you want?"
"Obviously, I've got something on my mind," Tobias replied.
The whole time he spoke, Tobias kept his gaze fixed squarely on Kaia, not giving her a single second of privacy.
"So? What's this about? If you've got something to say, sit across from me," Kaia shot back, her expression cool and composed, not letting her guard down for an instant.
Joel stood off aside, stiff as a post, but his gaze kept flicking between Kaia and Tobias.
Devin edged closer to Joel and murmured, "Have you noticed how weird my boss is today? Feels like he's going out of his way to stick close to Dr. Bennett."
"Really? Didn't catch that," Joel replied.
"Seriously, check out how close my boss is sitting to Dr. Bennett. Might as well be sharing the same chair," Devin pointed out.
Then, Devin's brows furrowed with worry. "Do you think my boss is about to catch feelings for someone else?"
Joel paused and asked, "Why do you say that?"
Devin whispered, "Man, you don't know my boss like I do. He's always had a thing for talented women. Miss Bennett is seriously impressive. That's why he finally noticed her. But now Dr. Bennett's here, and I think he's getting totally distracted. I mean, Miss Bennett's awesome. I respect her, but compared to Dr. Bennett, who's on a whole different level, it's not even close. I'm afraid my boss might ditch Miss Bennett and go after Dr. Bennett, instead!
"Come on, Joel, please give me some insider info. What does Dr. Bennett actually look like? Is she pretty? Prettier than Miss Bennett?"
