"You mean Kaia?" replied Kaia nonchalantly, not giving anything away.
Tobias smirked. "That's right. You two are almost uncanny. So tell me. What is your relationship?"
"We're just friends," Kaia said, sounding almost dismissive.
"Just friends?" Tobias teased, raising an eyebrow.
Kaia countered, tossing the question right back at him. "So, what do you think we could be?"
Tobias narrowed his eyes, keeping silent.
Kaia continued, "If you're dying to know what kind of connection I have with Kaia, why not go and ask her yourself?"
"Already did," Tobias said.
"Oh? And what did she say?" Kaia asked.
"She wouldn't tell me," Tobias replied.
Kaia leaned back comfortably in her seat. "Well, Mr. Moreno, it may be best not to push any further. Everyone's got secrets they can't share. Not saying anything doesn't mean there's no trust. There are things people simply want to carry on their own. Trying to pry into it isn't polite or respectful, you know?"
Upon hearing her words, Tobias mimicked Kaia and leaned back in his seat, looking relaxed.
"Dr. Bennett, you are something! With a few words, you can leave someone completely speechless and win over," Tobias said.
Kaia didn't bother responding to Tobias. She simply closed her eyes to rest, making it absolutely clear she was done and Tobias was free to leave.
However, Tobias, being as thick-skinned as ever, ignored the obvious dismissal and stayed put, refusing to go anywhere.
"Dr. Bennett, you've known Kaia for ages, right? Do you think there's any chance she and I might end up together someday?" Tobias asked.
Kaia sighed inwardly. 'Man, Tobias doesn't know when to give up,' she thought.
She opened her eyes and looked Tobias straight in the face. "I study science, not romance. Sorry, that's not exactly a question I can answer."
"So, do you think Kaia likes me?" Tobias kept pushing.
Kaia couldn't help it. A tiny smirk tugged at her lips.
Instead, she shot the question right back at him. "Well, what do you think? Does she?"
Tobias nodded with total conviction. "Absolutely. She adores me. Like, in her whole life, she wouldn't marry anyone else but me. She wants to have loads of kids with me. Only me, and a whole bunch of them."
Kaia was grinding her teeth so hard she was surprised nobody could hear it. 'Why am I still putting up with Tobias?' she thought, struggling to maintain her composure.
"Is that so?" she replied, keeping her tone neutral, though inside she could've rolled her eyes halfway to the moon.
"Absolutely!" Tobias nodded confidently, then scooted even closer, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "Promise you won't tell anyone. I'm about to tell you a secret."
"What secret?" Kaia deadpanned, unable to hide her curiosity.
Tobias flashed a wicked grin, saying, "Don't be fooled by her prim and proper front. Every night, she's all soft and loving in my arms, cuddly and clingy as can be."
Kaia let out a deep, frustrated breath.
She tried to keep it cool, but Tobias immediately picked up on it.
Tobias couldn't hold back his laughter. "When Kaia finally marries me, Dr. Bennett, you've gotta come celebrate and give us your blessing at the wedding!"
Kaia decided Tobias wasn't worth another word. She shut her eyes, turned her back to him, and pretended to sleep.
By the time she opened her eyes again, they'd arrived at their destination.
Kaia and the others had barely stepped off the plane when Kiera came trailing right after them.
'I have to show Dr. Bennett what I'm made of. Once she sees how capable I am, she'll have no choice but to keep me by her side as her personal bodyguard!' Kiera thought, determination burning in her eyes.
Tobias smirked. "That's right. You two are almost uncanny. So tell me. What is your relationship?"
