"Isn't it true?" said Kaia. Her expression went cold. "If you weren't always acting like a bully, why'd you bring the people of the War Division to gang up on me? I've done my homework, Kiera. There was a little actress crushing on Gavyn three years ago. You used your family ties to blacklist her, and you didn't stop until her reputation was shredded and she was left with nothing. Seven years back, some random person said you weren't even that pretty, and you made sure the person's family paid the price. You only ever know how to take people down."
"You... You..." Kiera stammered, totally blindsided and suddenly panicking at how deep Kaia's investigation had gone.
"So tell me, Kiera. If Dr. Bennett found out about all the messed-up stuff you've pulled, do you think she'd keep you around?" Kaia threw the question at Kiera, not holding back.
"No, you've got it all wrong!" Kiera shot back without missing a beat, desperate to defend herself. "That actress played everyone, acting all two-faced and pretending to be a victim so everyone would come after me. She thought she could walk all over me! And that random person? You have no idea how nasty his words were. Why shouldn't I teach him a lesson after he insulted me?" Kiera snapped.
Kaia had done her homework on Kiera and knew she wasn't lying about the details. Still, seeing how far Kiera had taken things, Kaia couldn't help but think she'd seriously gone way too far.
Honestly, part of the reason Kaia played along with Kiera was for the fun of it. But she also did it for sake of Victor and his two brothers. She figured it wouldn't hurt to help the Kiera family toughen Kiera up a bit.
Of course, that all hinged on Kiera not being totally hopeless yet.
"Cut the crap. Tell me, yes or no?" Kaia demanded, not giving Kiera any room to wiggle out.
"Fine! I'm in!" Kiera snapped, jaw clenched and eyes blazing. "But if you lose, then what? You better not try to squirm out of it!"
"I won't lose," Kaia shot back, her eyes practically daring Kiera to doubt her.
That was Kaia, pure confidence. Losing wasn't an option in her world.
Kiera couldn't stand that smug, winner-takes-all attitude Kaia always had. It was the same story the last time they squared off in that shooting match. Kaia acted like losing wasn't even on her radar then, and now Kaia was still exactly the same.
"If you lose, the conditions from our last bet are completely canceled," Kiera said, throwing down her own challenge.
"Works for me," Kaia replied, shrugging like she couldn't care less.
"Wait, I've got another condition," Kiera interjected, eyeing Kaia with a smirk.
"Alright, spill it," Kaia replied, totally unfazed.
"Let's flip it. If you lose, you do exactly what I tell you, no questions asked," Kiera challenged, her gaze unwavering.
Kaia just shrugged, cool as ever. "Whatever."
Kiera sneered, "Go ahead and play it cool, Kaia. Just wait. You're the one who's gonna be bawling soon!"
Kiera'd barely gotten the words out when the hurried footsteps sounded in the hallway.
"Someone broke into Dr. Bennett's room!" someone yelled from outside.
Kiera froze for a split second, then yanked the window open and was about to jump out.
"Why aren't you getting outta here?" asked Kiera, looking back at Kaia.
"Go ahead, you first. I'm not sweating it," Kaia replied, arms crossed, giving Kiera a laid-back, almost entertained glance.
"Seriously, I've never seen anyone fake it like you do! You know what? I kinda hope my granddad's guys catch you. Then you won't even get a shot at meeting Dr. Bennett, and the win is all mine!" Kiera scoffed
The footsteps outside were getting louder and louder. Any second now, they'd burst in.
"Seriously, what's with all the pointless talking? Shouldn't you be gone already?" Kaia said with a lazy grin, eyes amused as she looked at Kiera.
Kiera let out a cold snort and jumped out the window.
With a bang, Victor barged in with his men, the air crackling with tension.
The room was now empty, save for Kaia, standing there alone.
"Where's the other one?" Victor demanded, eyeballing Kaia with suspicion.
Kaia flashed an easy smile. "Chill, it was just a friend goofing off. Nothing serious."
'Just like that?' Victor thought, his instincts screaming there was definitely more to the story.
"You don't need me to send someone to look around?" Victor asked, still sounding skeptical.
"No, thanks. Go and do your thing. If something comes up, I'll let you know," Kaia said, stifling a sleepy yawn.
"Alright, I'll leave you to it," Victor said, still looking a bit reluctant as he backed out.
Victor shouted to his men, "We're done here. Let's move out."
Now that the coast was clear, Kaia picked up her robe and made her way to the bathroom. She finally was ready to take that long-awaited shower.
Just as she was about to head into the bathroom, a sharp knock rattled the door once more.
'Who is it this time?' Kaia thought, not hiding her irritation.
