"Who is it?" Kaia called out.
"It's me," Tobias answered from outside.
Kaia's heart skipped a beat when she realized it was Tobias. 'Seriously, what is he doing here at this hour?' she thought, a bit nervous.
"Just a second," she said.
Kaia quickly tidied up her clothes, pulled on a mask and hat out of habit, and then went to open the door.
Tobias flashed a smile, his eyes twinkling as he said, "Dr. Bennett, you're still all bundled up even though it's so late? There's no one else around, you know. You don't have to be so cautious. Trust me, I'd never spill your secrets."
For some reason, Kaia felt oddly vulnerable under Tobias's cheerful gaze, almost like she wasn't wearing anything at all despite being fully covered.
"It's not that I don't trust you," she said quickly, "I'm used to it."
Then, Kaia immediately changed the subject. "So, what brings you here?"
Tobias glanced inside. "I do have something to talk about with you. Can I come in?"
Kaia hesitated for a second, fighting an internal debate, before finally nodding. "Come in."
"Thanks," Tobias said as he stepped inside. He casually set his bag on the table, popped it open, and laid out a chessboard.
"What's this all about?" Kaia asked, wariness creeping into her voice.
Tobias sat down, a teasing glint in his eyes. "Word is you love chess, Dr. Bennett. How about we play a round?"
Kaia tensed at his words. Her guard instantly went up.
'Tobias is obviously testing me,' Kaia thought, feeling a bit uneasy.
"And who exactly told you I was into chess?" she asked, her tone wary.
"With my resources, it's pretty easy to find stuff out," Tobias replied, sounding completely unfazed. "As for who spilled the beans, let's say I'm keeping their info to myself."
He added, "Dr. Bennett, don't just stand there. Come on, let's play a game."
Kaia didn't move with Tobias's invitation.
Kaia knew everyone had their own distinct way of playing chess. If she even played one round with Tobias, she was certain he'd instantly see right through her. Her true identity would be exposed before she even realized it.
"Sorry, I'm wiped out tonight. I think I need to get some rest," Kaia said, letting out an exaggerated yawn, hoping it would help sell how exhausted she felt.
"Alright, I'll leave you be, then. Besides, we've got that big discussion panel tomorrow," Tobias replied.
Tobias lowered his eyes. The glow from the overhead light cast long shadows over his thick lashes, completely masking his emotions and making him seem almost enigmatic.
Tobias suddenly let out a low, muffled groan, sucking in a sharp breath.
"What happened?" Kaia spun around, her heart jumping in shock when she saw Tobias's finger had been sliced open by the edge of the chessboard. Blood was trickling out fast.
"Don't move. I'll get the first aid kit," Kaia said without hesitation.
Kaia grabbed the kit, her hands deft and steady as she disinfected the wound and wrapped it up.
"All set," she told him, gentle but firm. "Be careful not to let it get wet, or it'll get infected."
Tobias drew his hand back, giving his bandaged finger a lazy glance before turning those eyes on Kaia. There was something magnetic in his gaze, lingering on her as if he couldn't pull himself away.
"Why are you staring at me like that?" Kaia shivered, a wave of goosebumps crawling over her skin. She couldn't help but feel unsettled under his intense gaze.
Tobias held out his bandaged finger to her, smirking. "Wow, Dr. Bennett, I never pegged you for someone who was handy with first aid."
Suddenly, Kaia realized Tobias hurt himself on purpose.
'So, that's why the chessboard was busted,' Kaia thought, her suspicion confirmed. 'Tobias must've broken it himself to gauge my reaction.
'Seriously, what's wrong with Tobias? He went that far, wounding his own finger to test me?
'Why not just snap his whole arm for the drama?'
The more she dwelled on it, the more speechless she felt. It took a monumental effort not to roll her eyes right into her skull.
"Don't give me too much credit," said Kaia, shrugged. "I'm no medic, just know a bit about bandaging, a skill pretty much anyone can pick up."
"It's me," Tobias answered from outside.
